Chamois cream- what kind?

What kind of chamois cream do you use? I have used chamois butter, although I forgot mine and a friend let me use his. His was button hole brand. The button hole brand seemed to work better. I’m going to order some new cream and curious what your experience has been with other brands.

Go! Speak on this!

Good question. Always used Chamois Butt’r myself and have one unopened pack left - interested in others thoughts, as there has to be something a little better or at least a little cheaper for the same effectiveness.

Assos
.

On the cheap end of the spectrum, I actually like Queen Helene Cocoa Butter Face and Body Creme from Walmart, The Dollar Store or similar purveyors of fine products;) It’s so inexpensive you won’t be prone to skimp on the quantity applied. Give it a try and if you don’t like it for chamois creme you can still use it in the winter for dry skin after swimming.

Assos for training.

Nothing for racing.

This. But also give DZ Nuts and Gooch Guard a look.

Just a little Vaseline. Dirt cheap, available everywhere, lasts longest, nothing works better. Also I’ve found it washes well out of chamois as long as you don’t really slather it on, the same can’t be said of many other creams.

How much of any chamois cream is left after the swim? I’m not applying it in T1.

I do use some Sport Slick on areas the chafe (neck, armpit, left little toe) in a race. But its never been an issue when racing IM to not use chamois cream on the taint. I haven’t had to race with a saddle sore, but if I did I’d use Sport Slick to make sure it was still there when I got on the bike.

Chamois Butt’r. I keep a tube around the house and always have one of the smaller packets on me at all times when racing (bike / run). Last year at IMFL around mile six my inner thighs started chafing / burning really bad. No idea why or how - I was in a tri kit. Anyhow pulled off at the next pit stop, greased 'em up and got back to it. No more issues. Pretty sure I would have lasted about one more mile without it.

Mostly none of this is true (except the cheap and available everywhere part). Says science. All cycling specific chamois creams I use have zero problems washing out of my bibs/chamois. No matter how much I use. And a number of them have antibacterial ingredients included that combat saddles sores before they even start.

I can understand wanting to be cheap/saving some money. But saying vaseline works as well as a chamois cream like Assos is simply not true.

That’s what I use as recommended to me from a doctor/cyclist when I went in a few years ago for a saddle sore. Cheap and it holds up pretty good in the heat. It has worked better for me than several popular cycling specific labeled products.

Please outline your extensive experience with other products.

Aquaphor
Bag balm
.

Vaseline and/or products with petroleum jelly as an ingredient (Aquaphor, Bag Balm, etc) work every bit as good, if not better than other chamois cremes - Assos included. I have used many creams over the years and they all work pretty well, some better than others. Vaseline on a long ride in hot climates is about as good as you can do. I do find it more difficult to wash out however, I typically wash my cycling clothes on the delicate cycle. Once in awhile I run them on the causal cycle and they come out dead clean.

Having said this, I do not always use vaseline. I use others also, and many are good. Vaseline tends to be the best in Florida on full century rides. At least imho.

Desitin Creamy (diaper rash creme).

DZ nuts, once i used it nothing else compared.

Enzo’s Buttonhole is my new favorite. Wait…maybe I should re-phrase that

Through the years I have used Assos, DZ Nuts and Chamois Buttr’ Eurostyle extensively and I think that the Enzo’s performs at least as well as any of them and is a better bang for the buck.
