Chamath Paliyhapita for Gov of California?

So my friends remaining in CA, is he a better choice than Gavin or worse;

Tech investor Chamath Palihapitiya continued to stoke speculation about whether he would run for California governor in an interview Wednesday with CNBC’s Scott Wapner on “Halftime Report.”

Palihapitiya declined to give a yes or no answer on whether he really intended to run for the top post in the state, but said Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, “has done a terrible job,” citing high crime rates, high taxes, poor air quality and residents leaving the state.

“First step is we need to recall Gavin Newsom,” Palihapitiya said.

Unless his #1 agenda item is to bankrupt the Teachers Union, not much will change.

interesting guy. I wish I had $125,000 to do experiments.

I disagree with that. Something different isn’t automatically something better. I’d like some idea of what the alternatives to Newsom would be. And I have a pretty high bar for recalls. Like I don’t think there should have been a Scott Walker recall attempt. Not a big fan of Newsom - he’s a status climber, and the French Laundry thing was hard to take. But I’m not sure I’d call him dangerously incompetent or anything.

Thought this was going to be about some new STD that Newsom contracted…

Married to Guilfoyle I would not be surprised

Oh wait, that’s probably not unifying. Sorry

The French Laundry thing has ended Newsom wether he has admitted it yet or not.

The last CA recall had all sorts of crazies coming out of the woodwork as candidates. Ending up with Arnold was far better than many of the alternatives. CA got really lucky with their governors for a almost 16 years but you can’t win them all.

Since I run an ad-blocker, no dice on reading your CNBC link, so give me the cliff notes on what he believes / says he would do differently?

On the whole recall, I don’t know what Newsom has done that justifies a recall by the way. If you think differently, what has he done that justifies one? Serious question. Not “what could he have done better / differently”, but what has he done that is so bad, we should recall him?

And on the whole billionaire thing: the last thing we need is another self-entitled billionaire who thinks he can do better “cause”.

This is the relevant text of the most active recall effort, that got >400,000 signatures and is well funded:

…we intend to seek your recall and removal from the office of Governor in the State of California and to demand election of a successor in that office. The grounds for this recall are as Follows: Governor Newsom has implemented laws which are detrimental to the citizens of this state and our way of life. Laws he endorsed favor foreign nationals, in our country illegally, over that of our own citizens. People in this state suffer the highest taxes in the nation, the highest homelessness rates, and the lowest quality of life as a result. He has imposed sanctuary state status and fails to enforce immigration laws. He unilaterally over-ruled the will of the people regarding the death penalty. He seeks to impose additional burdens on our state by the following; removing the protections of Proposition 13, rationing our water use, increasing taxes and restricting parental rights.

That reads like a generic list of ideological grievance, rather than a specific, acute failure.

It doesn’t even mention COVID, oddly.

It sucks to be GOP in CA. But the GOP lost the election. Sorry.

Wait do they think the state governments enforce federal laws? What are governors doing to stop espionage? Why aren’t they enforcing those laws? When a cop pulls someone over they should make sure they are spying for a foreign country!

He was just giving straight talk about the Gamestop situation, basically the saying the hedge fun guys were getting exactly what they deserved. But he came across as an intelligent guy, who actually listens to what real people are saying.

And what would he doe as governor?

My dog really listens to people - at least while you are petty him - but that doesn’t qualify him to be governor.

But being serious again: what would he do about homelessness? Water situation? Taxes (if the answer is lower, what services does he recommend cutting)?

Thought this was going to be about some new STD that Newsom contracted…

My eyes did the same thing with the thread title.

If it came to a write-in vote he would definitely lose

People in CA suffer “the lowest quality of life as a result”…? Really, by what measure? Funny how it still remains so popular despite everyone allegedly being so miserable. What’s that Yogi Berra restaurant story again ~ “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded!”
