Chain Lubrication and Grime Question

How often? and HOW do you clean the crap from your chain and back rings. I’ve been told to spray it down with WD 40 and then use that Green Degreaser and then wash and wipe off all the grease with high pressure water. Then dry it off, then oil the chain and parts back up again.

If I put a drop of oil on each link in the chain, its going to be a dripping mess on the chain and moving parts. Is the chain supposed to be that oily? One drop per link? It will get so grimy after a few rides, it makes no sense.

I use the Park tool and the bio degreaser it came with. Works really well, though not as well as putting the chain in a tub of kerosene and putting it on the washing machine on spin cycle…

Why would you oil your chain? Do you like cleaning it that much? Oil attracts all the crap from the road that makes a normal chain black and greasy - so does WD-40. Use the teflon lube, it works pretty well - you are supposed to let it dry before you ride it. Some people swear by White Lightening, but it didn’t work for me.

I’m in the minority, but I end up using engine motor oil. My chains are always black and dripping, but they work well. I wipe them down with a rag once a week and away I go again. Its not pretty, but it works well and I usually get 5 years supply out of a bottle.
