Chain issues for race this afternoon

Preamble:
I - my road bike has been crashed into bits by a car few weeks ago. Thanks to insurance bureaucracy I still haven’t got a replacement for her.
II - I’ve been riding the TT rig exclusively for the past n weeks (10s drivetrain with bar-end shifters and tt brake levers, integrated aerobars, so no good for road racing)
III - two weekends ago, I raced a crit on a borrowed bike, old 9s drivetrain with a brand-new 9s cassette I had laying around. Naturally the gears skipped all the time and I ended up breaking the chain at lap #8, fortunately avoided crashing.
IV - I have another crit this afternoon, and I figured I could have found another bike, but the only one available was the same bike I raced two weeks ago - chain has simply been re-attached with one less pin. Owner tells me he hasn’t really sprinted or done any hard climbs to test the integrity, but says otherwise the bike is fine.

So - did I break the chain because of unmatched chain/cassette? If I ride with the original 9s matching gears, will I be running any risks?

Could I simply take my 10s drivetrain from the TT rig (chain, chainring and wheels) and slap them in place of my friend’s 9s drivetrain (albeit with 9s shifters?) ?

Greetings

buy a new 9s chain. install and ride.
