Chain falling off

I’ve been having problems with my chain falling off to the inside…especially when shifting down in the front, but also occasionally when shifting on the back. The bike’s been checked and tuned up several times but it continues to happen. I’ve got Shimano Ultegra components and have been told they shift abrubtly (anyone else have this problem?). When trying to shift down the the small sprocket in the front it is not possible to shift smoothly because it just drops down at a certain point. I switched from bar end shifters to STI shifters…is there any difference in the derailleur?? my big front sprocket is a 53 and the small a 39…having my chain fall off in races is getting kind of frustrating!!!

anyone have any suggestions?

thanks

Your front derailleur may still be misadjusted. It should almost touch the chain when you are in your largest cog on the back and the small ring on the front. I have also heard that it should had 1mm of room when on the small ring and the second largest cog on the rear.

If those things are ok, you can get a ‘Third Eye’ chain watcher. I think that is what they are called.

Lastly, shift down to the samll ring gingerly, never jam it quickly, especially when you are in a smaller cog in the rear.

The above information may be totally inaccurate, but it is my synthesis from my own similar occurrances.
