Chain catcher

Hi,

just wondering if many triathlete are using a chain catcher on thier bike? If yes, which one is the best?

Fred

Yes, the smart ones are running them. Eneko Llanos ran one on his BH that won Ironman Arizona last week. Pretty much zero penalty. K-Edge is the leader in the category, acecosportgroup.com

Use Di2 and you will not need a chain catcher.

$2,800 Di2 over $40 K-edge chain catcher, yeah that make sense.

K-Edge

Yes, the smart ones are running them…

The really smart ones are using spoke protectors behind the cassette, too.

Ok I took the Di2 stuff off and put the K edge on, but now I can’t get the bike to shift at all, how do you get yours to move the chain?

it’s a pretty simple machined piece, I have a couple from token that were significantly cheaper than the K-Edge ones and they work fine
.

I run one on both my bikes and they work like a charm. I try to make sure that my derailleurs are adjusted correctly but sometimes the chain would drop off the small ring when downshifting. I finally got fed up with it especially after I dropped a chain twice in my second IM.

I also run the K-Edge catchers and as far as I’m concerned they are money well spent.

I use a Di2 and a K-edge catcher as well. I don’t see anything wrong with using both.

Don’t forget the tassels and training wheels. Oh, and a good bell.

I put a Token catcher on before IMWI. I saw at least one dropped chain. If you put it on yourself be sure you can adjust the FD.

I do, use the K-edge chain catcher for 2 seasons and so far has been great. No chain drops and never had a problem with it since installing it.

Check out speedpark on ebay. It is the same design as k-edge and is about $21 shipped. I run them on both of my bikes.

I’ve used K-Edge, Rotor and Dog Fang type chain catchers. Here are some pros and cons of each:

K-Edge:
Pros: Highly adjustable, multiple color options, pretty light
Cons: Not as light as some others, expensive for what it is

Rotor (my preference):
Pros: Easy to set up, very light, almost half the price as K-Edge
Cons: Not as much adjustability as the K-Edge, only one or two colors

Dog Fang type:
Pros: Easy to set up, pretty much fool proof, cheap
Cons: Only works on round seat tubes, cheap looking plastic construction with band clamp, may need a long screwdriver to install depending on frame

I picked up a few token chain catchers from PBK. Cheap compared to the others.

Someone told me that there were some very cheap chinese chain catchers, but the ones I asked wanted a small fortune to follow me wherever I rode.

The ‘K-Edge’ chain catcher was less demanding, easy to install, didn’t spit, and comes in a range of ethnic backgrounds to match your bike.

i have a token one, very good little peice of kit.

Presuming you want it for a compact or standard double.

If you want it with a triple, unless its something smaller like a 50/39/30, its not quite long enough. I like triples over a compact and have a 53/39/30 (Rotor rings). The 30 is handy for the 30% climbs I occasionally get to after 90miles on the bike.

I have a “shark fin” on my carbon road bike, but nothing on my ali tri bike. I paid $12 NZD about US$9.

It’s saved me a couple of times, and the frame is still intact. All good.

I had the dog fang on my cx bike and it was very effective at trapping the chain behind the catcher once the chain came off, not very effective at stopping the chain.
