Overall construction/fit/finish:
The bike is very solid and has no glaring issues. There have been some that mentioned that the seat binder is easy to drop in the bike but if you do not pull the post out this is not an issue. The overall finish is good for a Cervelo but of course it is an average finish compared to most other brands. There are lots of hidden/hard to reach areas that the paint is a little rough. One example is the area under the seat stay as it comes off the seat tube. the other is the cutout that the fork sits in.
First ride impressions:
This bike likes to go and especially go fast. Each pedal stroke is rewarded with a blast forward. You can tell that there is no waste of effort.
cornering:
the bike is stiffer than the S3 at the front and this translates into faster and better steering. The only issue is when a large bump is hit which causes a little unsettling, compared to an S3 anyway, as the front does not deflect as easily and the rear even less.
Sprinting:
The S5 front end and BB is stiffer than an S3 so this does translate into better sprinting but again since it is a stiffer bike it does get a little unsettled on larger bumps.
Climbing:
No issues here. It is a little heavier than an S3 but it is also more efficient so I give this a wash. It is not a true WW bike but that is not the point for this bike.
Ride quality:
The S5 is smooth on the average conditions I find in my area. This means that one year old, or older, chip seal is muted well and does not cause any major vibration issues. It is not quite as good as the S3 but for the profile of the rear part of the bike it is a surprisingly good ride. Large bumps are felt quite a bit but a quick rise out of the saddle takes care of those better than sitting on the bike. Again the large bumps are not handled as well as an S3 but it is still pretty good.
Overall:
This is one fast bike that begs, pleads and taunts you to go fast. It tells you that the little ring is just a chain-catcher and you better not be using it unless the chain falls on it.
It is one fun bike to ride and I can only hope that I can live up to the image that it presents.
