Cervelo S5 Question

So, I’ve seen some folks talking about the S5 lately and I’ve got a question for you"

Is the only difference between the 3 levels of the S5 weight? Is there a difference in carbon quality and stiffness? In aerodynamics? Anything else? Thanks!

Yes in carbon quality, no in aerodynamics, very slight in stiffness, probably the lighter frames give up some durability in impacts.

No in aerodynamics? I thought that was the whole point!

Definately no difference in aerodynamics. They use the same molds for all levels of frame

He’s asking about the three carbon versions. Not the S3 model.

Sorry, read through the original post too fast. Being Canadian I am supposed to know everything about Cervelo, so that is embarrassing…

well the way they make the expensive ones lighter is by using more expensive carbon, so yes the carbon is higher quality, but the only result of that is the frame is lighter.

they claim the stiffness is the same across all models. I’m sure some variation exists but nothing substantive.

Therefore i was considering the rival package (i like that frame color better) and maybe asking the shop to swap the der/shifters, brakes with ultrgra. Not sure if they will. And of they agree how much should that cost? Shoul be much less then 4800$ (team frame w ultrgra)

Why? Rival is as good or better than Ultegra IMHO and it’s actually lighter…

(edit: with the possible exception of the brakes, but only because the Rival level lack a centering adjustment screw)

Not sure why. I know its been debated but i thought rival was inline w the 105. I currently have a specialized roubaix w ultegra and dont want to feel like iam downgrading. ( from ultegra to rival)

There isn’t a direct formula, you either like the shimao hood shape and shift action or you prefer Srams. Beyond that everything on all 3 groups if perfectly serviceable.

If rival is as good as ultegra and its been established that the team frame is marginally better, why would anyone dish out an extra 1k$ for the team / ultegra?

Your guess is as good as mine…

Color?

I’m not certain the first part of your equation is true…I know SRAM likes to say that (and the Force = DA and Red is above DA), but I’m not really buying it.

Just my $.02.

don’t know, the team frame doesn’t really make any sense to me. to few grams for the dollar.

The Garmin-Cervelo Team rides the Team version and not the VWD. From that fact I’d assume the VWD gives up some stiffness…

no

the team frame builds up to the uci minimum (edit: according to gerard vroomen) so there is just no point in providing them with a more expensive, harder to build one.

then again they use a few r5ca’s, but that is madness to begin with =)

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. Has anyone ridden the S5 yet? If so, which “model” and what did you think? How does it compare to the S2 (which I currently have) or S3?

Just my $.02. I’ve used Shimano for the last six year and switched to sram this year for the front and rear derailleur, and switched zipp shifters to sram. The build on the derailleurs is a LOT better then the shimano DA is for shimano, its noticably better when i put it on the bike. Performance wise I have yet to test it out but I see no reason why that wont be on par with shimano if not better.
