Cervelo p5 vs P3

Curious to hear people who have tried both out. What the differences are, preferences, best bang for your buck?

I just sold my P5 and am now on a P3. Both were/are fitted with TriRig Alpha X. The P3 also has Omega X brakes. I can’t imagine there is any difference in aero–maybe 0.01 watts? A little less cool factor but a lot easier to travel with the P3 (I cut the rear brake line and completely remove front end when traveling with P3). Can’t do that with hydraulic lines…

Congrats on the sale! I saw your red P5. Do you mind if I ask how much you sold it for? Why did you sell it?
What p3 do you have now?

Yeah that’s it, it’s .01 watts. End of story, no need for a P5.

I sold it, $4495, because it was a PITA to travel with (using the Ruster Sports case). Plus, I build up a new bike every year. I can’t help myself.

New P3 below.

What do you have there holding the rear bottle cage???

Great looking bike btw…agree with your reasoning…just built up a new P5-3…was lucky to find a new frameset for an unbelievable price 🙂

It’s a Profile Design RM-10. I just searched and it’s discontinued. Too bad as it’s perfect for a Cervelo.

It will be back

Had a P3, sold to get a P5. I was slower. Sold the P5 and built up a P4Evo. Faster than the P5 and about the same speed as the P3. The P5 was beautiful, but a pain in the ass and slow for me.

Great looking bike there!

I agree they are just eye candy…but I didn’t know they were heavier . Someone told me they were faster on long distance flat course

How did you validate which was quicker?

P5 is quicker than the P2/3, but not buy enough to justify the price when new. P4 could be quicker than the P5, but the limitation in wheels mean the P5 can be made faster (plus the brakes work).

Perhaps they are a little faster, but I reckon any performance gains are negligible, certainly not worth the difference in price from a P2. I know a few people that have gone from P2/P3s to P5s and gone a little bit quicker, 1 - 2mins for a 70.3, but then they’ve often upped their training as they take triathlon more seriously, plus upgraded their wheels. That’s what stopped me from getting a P5, when I sold my old P2, I bought a new P2 instead. I used to lust after a P5, but to be honest they are starting to look a bit dated now, it’s an 8 year old design.

I would have thought if there was a reasonable difference in performance between a P2 and a P5, Cervelo would have significant advertising demonstrating this.

I ride an 11 mile out and back Course all the time at lunch. Been doing it for years. I log each lap in a spreadsheet noting power, clothing, tires, helmet, etc. p4 is consistently faster for me. It’s not apples to apples - made some position changes with the p4 that seem to work for me.

I have no trouble running wider modern wheels in the p4, just can’t use 25mm tires or continentals. That’s no issue as I train on Zipp tangents Course and run the Vitoria corsa speed 23 tubeless on a set of 90mm light-bicycle wheels with an aero jacket.

My brakes work great on the p4.

So an apples to oranges comparo… okay…

Except I couldnt get in the position on the p5 without ditching the integrated aerobar, faster for me is more important that faster without me, and I saved some money. So an apple or a faster orange and a wad of cash may be a better comparison.

There are faster bars for the P5 than the Aduro. Simply saying the P4 is faster due to more favourable geometry is confusing the issue.

The op asked about differences, preferences and value - not an optimal solution in a wind tunnel. Sorry this thread and my answer confuses you.

I’ve aero tested a lot (including with my P5), and my Plasma 3 was ~10w faster with a completely different position. Does that mean the Plasma 3 is a faster frame? No, it has to do with what’s achievable with 8 hours of aero testing vs. 2hrs.
Look at my response above, the P5 is faster than the P2/3, but by not enough to justify the difference in MSRP unless you get a deal. Without knowing the OP’s fit coordinates, you can’t say if the P4 is a better option than a P2/3/5 (it likely isnt).

My statements were personal, not declarative. They were also not a recommendation to the op, just my experience. If you discount that, I could really give a damn.
