Cervelo P5 Hydration & Storage

All,

I’m looking for ideas on where do most of you put your hydration & storage on a P5. Right now I have one bottle on the rear and not sure what I should put on the down tube or aero bars. Also, where do you store your extra tubes, etc…

Just looking for good ideas and pictures might help of current setups.

I own the new P5 2017…Thanks…

Mike

Bottles behind saddle and BTA if they’re not too narrow. Gels/bars in top tube bag (torhans aero bento), spare tube below or behind saddle.

Same here but I use an elite chrono dimpled bottle in the down tube.

If it helps, while we cannot claim to be 100% objective, here is a suggestion (and image) for P5 top tube storage, as we make some top tube aero bentos (and make 'em here in Chicago) for the P5 (and lots of other bikes):

If you have any questions, please ask away. And I imagine that lots of STers that use our Speedpacks can chime in about the pluses and minuses as well …

Tube on top of saddle?

I just bought a P5 and looking at this as storage on the downtube. Will a spare tube and Co2 fit through the bottle opening? It is tough to tell from pics online. Thanks

Same here! Mine comes tomorrow.

I was thinking a Dark Speed bento, 2 bottle cage on back, one for bottle, one for tube, etc., BTA on front (any recommendations?).

Also, trying to figure out where best to mount the garmin.

What distance are you racing?

Previous Setup:
BTA: 1x 750ml Bottle
Rear: 1x 1L Bottle
Dark Speed Works Bento Box: 2xCO2 + Adapter, Tire Lever, Extra Long Valve Extender, and tube.
Under ISM Seat: 2nd Tube

Current Setup:
BTA: 1x 1L Bottle (moved it here as I use it more)
Rear: 1x 750ml Bottle (calories and use it 3-4x over 90k)
Scott Plasma Bento Box: 1xCO2 + Adapter, Tire Lever, Extra Long Valve Extender + 2x GU Chomps Packs
Under ISM Seat: Tube

Switching to the current setup I lose out on a 2nd tube, but I like how the Scott Plasma Bento box works and how clean it is. I will admit I lose space, and for that reason if I was to switch back to racing IM’s I would definitely get another Dark Speed Works as I liked it, was just old and I replaced it with the Scott Plasma Bento Box. I leave the frame clean and do not run a bottle on the down tube, and from the data that I have seen it seems like you would be wise to do the same. No reason to have 3 bottles on a supported race course.

P5-Three, for 140.6:

-Two 750 ml bottles in line BTA, one for water, one for electrolyte.
-One 750 ml bottle containing ~17 gels on the down tube.
-One 750 ml bottle with tube and tools behind the saddle, secured with tape.
-Four half powerbars stuck to the top tube.

Definitely BTA hydration. Super easy since the aerobars/pads are designed for it. I train with a bottle on the downtube and my last long distance races the same, but I may switch to an aero bottle there (xlab), work with just the BTA bottle, try dual BTA bottles, or, lastly, consider one behind the seat for my next race.

I also jam a tightly wound up tube around a co2 cartridge and inflator between the rails under my saddle. You can hardly tell it’s there.

Sure are a ton of ways to tackle this though. Good luck!

Cheers,

Ist…Thanks for all the suggestions, I put a bottle behind the saddle, I’m still looking to see what to use on the aero bars and down tube. Plus, where do i keep my spare tube. I’m racing the IMTX in April, and a couple of 70.3’s in the summer. Nice setup, by the way…

Thanks again,

No need to put anything on the down tube
.

For an IM I use a bottle between the aero bars, X-Lab aero bottle on the down tube with my nutrition and the X-lab pod on the rear with my flat kit. You could add additional nutrition on the rear and put your flat kit in an aero pouch. I want to say someone tested an aero bottle vs no aero bottle on the down tube and it actually tested better with the aero bottle.

I tried to install the xlab aero bottle on the down tube on the new P5 and it wouldn’t sit flush. not sure why, maybe I got a bad one.

I did order a the xlab bta bottle for my aero bars and will probably add a mesa bag to hold tubes and CO 2. I guess I’m done assuming nothing on the down tube

Maybe someone else can chime in with actual aero data on round bottle vs aero bottle vs no bottle on the down tube.

Hey IronMike68,
I have seen a ton of really clean P5 set ups over the years. There is some great advice here, this is my setup from a couple of years ago. A good starting point you can tweak to work for you.

-1 x BTA (550ml water)
-1 x Rear (550ml calories swapped at 90k)
-X Lab Stealth 300 (2 gels, 2 mini chocolate bars, salt)
-Arundel aero bottle on DT for spare tubular / tools (modified and installed upside down) Removed when I switched to clinchers in 2015. Stuffed tube / Co2 under saddle and hoped I didn’t need a second one

Cheers,

Happy to help! When you say it is not sitting flush do you mean the cage against the down tube?

My first question would be - Are you using the extra washers that came in the small baggie? When you mount the cage on a P5 you have to use the larger slots, so the penny washers help with the mounting of it.

If you want to email me direct with some photos I can see what is happening.
