Cervelo p5 and travel

He guys I am thinking about getting a p5 with di2 I was wondering how much you have to disassemble with a bike Bo for travel. I have a all 3 sports bike hard case. On my old speed concept it was really easy I’m not much of bike mechanic just wondering how many bolts I had to take out to lay bars to side. Thanks

Just came week ago to gran canary for arizona preparation.
P5-6 and scicon hardcase.

Had to
1.remove stem cap (4 bolts)
2. Loosen stem bolts
3. Remove the brake from Fork ( one bolt)
4. Remove the brake fairings (3 screws each)
5. Remove the fairing on top of the brake (3screws)

Then drop the fork and remove the bar to side of the frame.

why I would get the uci version.

Janne’s reply was spot on. I’ve travelled with the P5-6 (mechanical, not Di2) about a dozen times and there’s no way of skipping those steps. With mechanical shifting, there’s not enough cable slack to lift the stem/bars over the fork steerer, hence the need to remove the fork from the headtube, which allows you to rest the bars flat against the frame. I’m not sure whether Di2 gives you the slack to forgo removing the fork - hopefully Di2 users will chime in.

Di2 users experience the same issues due to the hydraulic hose line.

All in all, it takes 15-20 minutes to do the mechanic’ing necessary to put a P5-6 in a box (although Di2 makes it easier for sure). Then you add in the padding. Not an especially difficult bike to deal with, just more difficult than a…P3 or something similar.

Doh, of course! On the whole the P5 isn’t difficult to travel with, but you’re right, it’s not as simple as packing a road bike. In my experience, the Plasma Premium is the easiest of the ‘superbikes’ to travel with.

15-20 minutes is about right for me to drop the fork and quickly package it.

From start (having the bike in front of me, wheels on) to fully packed and padded in my EVOC bag, it’s 30 minutes; not rushed, taking my time being methodical.

Once you’ve done it a few times, it becomes a very logical routine.

So you can get a P5 six in a hard case like a trico iron case? LBS mechanic claims i wont be able to…

I travel with mine in a Bike Box Alan, no fit issues at all. Breakdown takes about 20 minutes (35 if I’m in a hotel room and have no prepstand)

What size is your bike? I’ve never personally tried it so can offer no personal insight.

I have a trico and get my 58 p4 in there no probs. why would the P5 not fit in taken apart am I missing something?

With a SciCon Aerocomfort bag you don’t have to do anything other than take the wheels off. For those who are curious there is a youtube video from one the team TBB guys packing his P5 in a SciCon bag. Check it out if you are curious.

Jack

That guy just happened to win Kona. I have a P5 SRAM Red and used the scicon bag for the first time 1 month ago. Very simple to pack and the bike got there in 1 piece.

Zero issues with a 54cm P5-6 in the Trico Iron Case.

Just curious - what size P5 do you have? Did you have remove anything other than the wheels?
I have a Di2 - and removing the extensions could be very tricky - especially with the s-bends…the cable is tricky to thread through…

Thanks!

Which sort of bag would you recommend? I have one of these

and I am puzzled about how to make the bike fit in without having to completely remove the aerobar - which will be a pain due to the cabling and hydraulic breaks.

Considering buying a scicon aerocomfort just to make life easier. My current travel case is pretty banged up anyway.

I use a SciCon Aerocomfort bag and have a P5-Six in size 58. Relative simple job in packing it. Due to the frame size being 58 I just need to undo the top four screws on top of the stem, and then I just hang the the extensions to the side of the frame. Extensions are wrapped in some plumbing foam and then tied with velcro to the frame to ensure that they don’t move. I have just about enough cable slack to be able to do this. Got Sram Red, so its mechanical. If I m in hurry I can pack bike in 10minutes.

I tried packing it into a Bikeboxalan, but it was to much of a pain, having to do the release of the fork and front brake. Don’t have the patience with it. Have flown with the SciCon Aerocomfort bag to South Africa and Los Angeles, and used local airlines, and no problem at all. Only once did it not arrive, but when it did bike was fine. South African Airways just forgot to load it.

So with the scicon aerocomfort bag, there’s enough volume that you don’t have to remove the fork from the frame?

There is a great video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuSWF0ki7nI This shows how Frederik Van Lierde packs his P5Six. Not sure about his frame size or the extensions at the bar, as his fits without taking anything apart. My one is a 58, and my bar extensions are to long, so thats why I take off the top bit, and hang them by the side.
