Cervelo P2SL 08 vs P1 09

My nearest Cervelo dealer has a P2SL 2008 for $1499 and a 2009 P1 for $1750.
Anyone have thoughts on which is better? Is there any difference other then the name and color?

Thanks.

The P1 is the old P2SL/P2k. Should be pretty much the same frame. IDK if the components are different.

the only difference that I know of is that the P1 has a compact crank and the P2sl has a standard.

My 08 P2SL came with a compact crank.

If the '08 P2SL is the Dura Ace model then I would go for that one. Not just for the upgraded components, but the anodized frame as well.

If they are both Ultegra then I don’t think there is much of a difference. I’m not sure if the '08 had Vision basebars and aerobars like the '09 P1. That may be the only change (besides paint).

I was thinking of trying to get a sale bike and saw the same thing at my LBS, P1 for $1750 and the P2SL for $1399 (I guess my local shop is in more of a hurry than yours). The only difference I saw was in the cockpit. The P1 has a Visiontech basebar, clipons and brake levers and a Selle saddle while the P2SL has a Cervelo basebar, Profile Design Clipons and saddle and Dia Compe brake levers.

I figure I will probably put off the purchase for another year when the 09 P1 will be 20% less than the 2010 P1’s, but my LBS also has Felt S22’s for $1599 and they aren’t making any more of those.

so aerobars and crank sound like the main difference. What impact does the compact crank have on the bike? And are these worth the ext $300 in price for the '09?

This will be my first Tri bike and I have always used mountain bikes before this. Any info would be helpful.
Thanks.

if you know your way around a bike, and you know wha kind of aerobars suit you, it’s cheaper to get the 08, and then do your own modifications. Even if you wanted a compact crankset, it would be cheaper to swap out the regular crankset for a compact one on your own.

I think they both had compact cranks, but maybe some 08s have compacts and others have standards. You probably want to do a search on the forum for compact cranks, but the bottom line is that you will end up running smaller gears in the back to get the same speed at the same cadence. You will spin out a lower max speed going down hills with CCs but you will be able to spin up hills easier. I would guess as a MTB rider you are used to have that extra gear to make it up a steep hill and would want the CCs.

From the article on the P1 on the Slowtwitch front page:

"This bike doesn’t have anything you have to change out, not even the gearing. It comes with an FSA MegaExo crank in—get ready—a 110mm bolt pattern. This makes Cervelo one of the only bike companies that gets it. Triathletes aren’t bike racers, they don’t ride variously with 400w exertions mixed in w/120w ride-alongs. Triathletes ride, or should ride, at a relatively steady exertion rate, and that relatively high rate requires turning a relatively high cadence. So, the P1’s 50x34 chainrings are spec’d for the sort of riding a triathlete will do, day in and out. "

Go with the P2-SL.

  1. Its cheaper.
  2. Its Anodized

The SL anodized frame is rugged and will keep its good looks longer than a p1 paint job. I had a P2K with numerous chips and discoloration. By far one of the best TT bikes I have owned.

I believe both bikes have compact cranks. But, to answer your question you only need to look at another one of your threads.

Also, to be clearer, only the Dura Ace version of the P2SL is anodized. The Ultegra P2SL is painted. All '09 P1’s are painted.

Has the seatpost design changed on the P1? It doesnt appear to have the reversible clamp to get the 78* seat angle.

Looking at a close up on Cervelo’s site, it is different than prior years and not obvious to me how it works. But, they still refer to it a “flippable” and able to achieve STA of 74-79 degrees.

I think my LBS has a P1 so curiosity may have me heading there to take a looksee.

Good catch!
