I’m thinking about converting my Cervelo P2 into either a road bike configuration with drop bars or a singlespeed for commuting in the city. I just wanted to see if anyone who has already made this or a similar conversion could post a picture and a couple of headaches that came along with making these changes? Thank in advance.
road:
may need a lot of spacers. not really a problem for intended use
only 1 bottle cage, again, probably not a problem
singlespeed:
horizontal dropouts not long enough, not all gear/chain combinations will allow you to get proper chain tension. otherwise works fine.
Could you not use a chain tensioner to solve that?
Depending on the gear, you might get lucky and make it work without the tensioner.
Would taking a couple chain links out take care of that?
Would taking a couple chain links out take care of that?
With some gear combos you end up needing like a half a chain length more, or less, so not much you can do.
There is a fine line between chain length, tension and the ability to get the chain on/off the chainring/cog. That fine line is the length of the horizontal dropout. A chain tensioner would take care of that as it would allow you to have a longer chain but still have the appropriate tension.
As others have said, P2 to road bike - generally no problem. P2 to singlespeed - might have some issues. For road bike use, if your original fit on the bike was not too extreme (i.e., the frame is not too much on the small size), you might be able to get away with not needing too many spacers. If it helps, we have a gallery of similar road/tri hybrids here, including a few P2s.
