Cervelo OLD vs. NEW

I want a P2k, but cannot justify the new price. Can anyone tell me the differences between a 2001 or 2002 and the new 2003? Gerard?

The new price is less than the old in our store, as it is on their website…

okay i dont know differences between years, but the new ones have a thinner seatpost, better paint (older p2K’s were known for chipping/peeling paint–at least i know a 2000 or '01 p2k thats got peeling paint), better internal routing hardware.

Maybe i missed some things and maybe i made some things up, but i tried, and i’ll be corrected if im wrong.

I was considering buying a used 2001 P2k at $1000, versus spending twice as much on a new 2003 model. Unless there is some compelling reason to buy the new model, than I think used will be the best choice for someone like me just getting into the sport.

I appreciate any insight.

In the past couple of months my wife bought a new P2K and my friend a used one. Buy the used P2K. There are some (very) minor improvements on the newest models but nothing that comes close to warrant spending the extra grand. Use the money saved to buy some good aero wheels.

I purchased a used 2000 P2K (red) in Sept 2001, and it’s a wonderful bike. It came with race wheels (404f/disc) and DA for (not much) less than what a new P2K would have cost in 2001. The paint job chips VERY easily on this bike (I forget which model year they fixed this, but it was finally resolved), but who the hell cares … I may get a custom paint job this year. Then I’ll get to hear my mechanic bitch about the cable routing. Again, who cares.

The one thing you really should do is purchase the new seatpost head (the original had some issues). The new is just plain easier to manipulate IMHO. Also, my model has a brass shim in the seatpost; I don’t know if that was standard or a after-market fix, but some bikes had problems with seatpost slipping. All manufactured things will have small issues; Cervelo had done well to address the ones that have arisen in their manufacturing process. Here’s the seatpost head URL … ask around about the shim … I spent some time on the Cervelo Yahoo Group before making a final decision. The archives will have tons of posts about the seatpost head and the paint jobs.

First of all, there is a brass shim in all P2Ks, P3s and Soloist, unless the owner lost it (which can happen, if the seatpost is removed one has to take care that the shim stays put).

As for old vs. new, it all depends on the state of the old bike. A 2001 P2K that was only used on Sundays to go to church for $1000 is obviously a good deal, but a bike where most of the components are worn out and need replacement would not be (in other words, I wouldn’t buy the bike Perry Stone has used to ride around Australia non-stop).

As for frame differences, the major ones would be set-screws in the dropouts and the new cable stops (instead of plastic guides). Both seem details, but the lack of either can be quite frustrating to some.

As for the seatpost, all you have to make sure of is that the seatpost HEAD is the new verson (it is black, the old one was silver). If it is the old one, then the new one can be purchased for $10 plus shipping.

Looks like the last time this question was asked was over 6 years ago. With the newer models I will have to ask the question again.

Cervelo PS2 Ultegra New or Used?

I have a line on a used 2008 used P2 Ultegra. I tried it and it fits well. The bike looks like it has been well taken care of but the previous owner is an avid triathlete so she has put over 6000 KM on it and the price she is asking is $2500.00. My dealer has a 2009 for 2850.00 or the 2010 for 3100.00. Should I purchase used and place the rest of my hard earned cash into accessories (eg. wheel upgrades - I found a pair of 404 650 zipps for just over 700.00 that would work). I am not sure what I should be considering in making this decision?

I am assuming you mean a P2 or as it was formerly known P2C? $2500 for a used bike with that mileage sounds pretty expensive, I would go new if I were you. Also I am assuming you are looking at a 48cm bike if your considering 650C wheels correct?

$2500 for a used P2C is pretty high. When $300 more gets you new then that is not good value. Used price would have to get down close to 50% of new before I would begin to consider it, especially when you know it has a lot of miles.

You are talking KM so I am assuming you are not also quoting US $. Can you convert your $ to US or tell us what you are using?

Sound high to me for a used one. Will they negotiate?

I would buy the 2009 P2C.

Buying new gives you a lifetime warranty on the frame. The small discount for buying used isn’t worth it.

And it’s also not worth it to buy the 2010 since the only upgrade I can see is from Selle San Marco to Fizik saddle.

**but I thought it funny that you’d regard 4,000 miles as a lot. You must be a triathlete. **

I don’t record training in miles. If I used 17 mph as an average then that is only about 75 percent of last years miles, so I guess it really isn’t that great. My Yaqui probably has 25,000 miles on it and it works fine. Maybe I just think of carbon fiber as more perishable, though uncrashed, it will probably will last just as long.

I’m about to buy a Cervelo P2 as well, coming off of a QR Kilo aluminum frame.

The question is, should I get the 2009, DA 7800 or the 2010 Ultegra which are about the same price, give or take a haggle. The 09’s in my opinion are pretty ugly paint job wise, the 2010’s are really nice color’s. Saddle doesn’t matter, I’ve got my Adamo which I like just fine.

it depends on what’s more important to you. A better paint job or better components. The 09 and 10 frames are the same.

FYI, I switched from a '06 Tequilo (aka Kilo with a carbon fork) to a '07 P2C. Presuming the P2 fits you, you will love the upgrade. Night and Day.

I have a p2c built up as my race rig. If you look around, you can probably come up with an older aluminum one for a good deal, I recently picked up a p2, alu, not sure what year but its blue and white for 300 bucks (frame only) but its like new so im building it up.

But a nice paint job makes you faster and your competition slow down right?

if its red, maybe
.

I would get the Dura Ace and learn to love the colour scheme.
