No I ran the cable housing all the way to the hidden side of the grommet and then used a second piece of housing from the grommet to the brake. I did put a ferrule on the piece inside the top tube. Believe it or not I was more concerned with cutting the grommet than the plastic insert. Weird, I know.
I guess it would be possible to cut the backside of the grommet and run full housing all the way back to the brake.
Discussed it here back in 2014, there was a better diagram but it seems where that photo was hosted it had been taken down. Post 32 is where I show how it was routed, but others have discussed above how to do it. Shouldn’t be an issue as they mention.
while that method works, it is a little :sticky" on smaller frame sizes, ie 48, hence my preference is drilling hole in back, cable ends up way less “sticky”
.
Yeah, I think that I’ll start with that and see how it works. My only hesitation is about taking the fork off which would mean disconnecting the front brake, which is kind of a pain with the alpha x setup that I have.
Before dropping the fork, you can try to feed the cable&housing from back to front. Make yourself a hook out of some clothes hanger or a wheel spoke to snag the cable up and out the opening. Then you can make a nice big loop down in the head tube and trim as necessary.
If you have a bike stand, trying using that with the bike upside down and let gravity bring it close to the top tube which should make it easier to grab.

Instead of disconnecting the cable from the brake, remove the brake from the fork. That way you keep the cabling in tact & can reattach afterwards.

If it’s an Omega X brake, you don’t have to disconnect the cable OR remove the brake. Just pop the wedge out of the brake (no tools required), then the brake and bars are decoupled. It’s a five second job and is super easy with the wheel removed.
