Like a lot of us was hoping to get it this year for my P3 - email from Cervelo yesterday suggested they would not be available now until 2005.
What is your motive for wanting carbon?
Very few people agree that one get’s a better ride nor much weight savings with carbon over alloy.
If the cool, pretty factor is the reason, I guess waiting sucks.
It would seem that the carbon seatpost is very low priority to Cervelo. makes me wonder about how they view carbon over alloy for a seatpost. I’m sure that tooling for a very limited production of proprietary seat posts is extremely expensive. I’d guess that the price for the seatpost will far exceed what one would expect to pay a production carbon post.
Seems like Carbon Seat posts are similar to saddles - a personal thing. If you poll this board I’m sure you will get a pretty even split of those claiming extra comfort and those claiming no difference. With regards to Cervelo (i stand corrected on this) I believe a carbon post is now standard on high end bikes like the Soloist, P3 etc - certainly seems that way after visiting my local bike shop…so obviously it must have some reasobable benefit and priority in their eyes. I bought my P3 prior to the post being available and it made no difference to my decision then - however would love one now!
Didn’t somebody who works with carbon in an engineering capacity point out that there is little difference in compression forces on a carbon or aluminium seat post. Therefore, there is no real ride difference.
Of course he did this after I had already $$ replaced all my aluminium seat posts with carbon ones.
A little correction, all of the 2003 and 2004 backlog is virtually eliminated (I believe there are 50 left on backorder which go out next week) and after that they will become available for aftermarket. This would be June.
I bought a late-season 2003 P3, and I was promised a carbon post by the LBS as soon as they were available. I had asked them a couple of times about availability, but had eventually forgotten all about it. I went in last week to pick up my compact cranks, and was given my long-awaited carbon seatpost. Hoorray!! I think I literally squealed with joy in the shop. I don’t know if it’s any lighter than the aluminum version (though it feels absurdly light in my hands) or if it rides any better, but it’s damn sexy. What’s my point (besides gushing that I finally got my carbon post)? Hang in there. When you least expect it, your’s will show up ![]()
I have received mine some time ago . . . very cool, very comfortable
Gerard, for those of us who are curious, what is the weight difference in grams between a “standard length” (the one that comes stock with your framesets) carbon P2/P3 post and a cervelo alumimun P2/P3 post?

Shaun,
Unfortunately the carbon posts will not be available until the 2005 season at the earliest.
Thank You,
