Catskill Mountain Double Iron Training Stage Race

Catskill Mountain Multisport will organize a week long training event in late April. This is not a sanctioned or insured event, and participants will compete at their own risk on open roads.

The double iron distance stage race kicks off with the April 20th Kingston Classic 10K.

Each stage will be a race. There will be a winner’s yellow jersey and a climber’s mountains jersey. We’ll probably have finishers jerseys as well. The winner would have the lowest aggregate time, like in the Tour de France.

The swims will be at the YMCA during Ronnie’s masters swim class. He should be able to get passes for non-members.

Here’s the proposed schedule. I look forward to your comments.

Sun: 1 pm - Kingston Classic (10K); 4 pm - Bike Circuit Race ( 30 miles - 10 laps of Tongore / Mill / 213)

Mon: 7:30 am - 3000 yard swim for time; 26 mile Bike (Devil’s Kitchen Course); 4 x 2 mile run on track

Tue: 13.1 mile run / 10 mile flat TT (Hurley Mt. Road)

Wed: 7:30 am - 2450 yard swim for time; 5.4 mile running circuit race @ Gallis (6 x 0.9 mile hilly circuit); 30 mile bike

Thu: 9.7 mile trail run; 34 mile bike

Fri: 7:30 am - 3000 yard swim for time; 10 mile run @ rail trail / 10 mile flat TT (Hurley Mt. Road)

Sat: 8 am - 84 mile road stage (American Zofingen Course)

Totals: S 8450 yards, B 224 miles, R 52.4 miles

King of the Mountains:

We’ve got 2 key mountain stages, Devil’s Kitchen and American Zofingen.

The hardest climb is Devil’s Kitchen to the top of Platte Clove. It should get big points. After that it keeps climbing to the entrance of North Lake, which is a good finish for more points.

American Zofingen has 6 peaks, each of relatively equal difficulty.

Points are as follows:

Top of Platte Clove - 11, 8, 7, 6, 5 (Devil’s Kitchen get’s an 11 out of 10, just like Spinal Tap’s amplifiers)
Finish at North Lake - 9, 8, 7, 6, 5
Top of Mohonk each of 3 times - 7, 6, 5
Top of Minnewaska 1st 2 times - 7, 6, 5
Finish at Minnewaska - 10, 8, 7, 6, 5

Everyone is welcome to compete in any or all stages.

just in case you missed it
.

I’m going to see if the Y would put some sponsorship behind this as they are very multi sport friendly.

is their a cost for the series
if i am to old to race can I help (-;
.

The “race” is free. You can race any stage or all as you please. And, you’re never too old (although some of us may be too fat).

Free!! Nice price. How about accomodations? Any place to tent camp nearby? Would make a great training vacation.

You can camp on my property. It’s central to everything we’re doing.

Killer view, and friendly bear. And free. Just sign a waiver.

There’s even a bathroom I can leave unlocked for you to use.

You’re right. It will be an awesome training vacation.

I might take you up on that, Would love to do this, just to early for me to commit to yet.

No need to commit anytime soon. I hope you can make it.

I will be there if I can make it!

to fat to race ?

So you have seen me (-;

“Sat: 8 am - 84 mile road stage (American Zofingen Course)”

Is it OK to just show up for the last day?

I thought we were on the poor side of the river, but this makes me wonder what’s going on in Kingston. Is everyone living off their trust funds? Am I the last one who has to go to work every day? Or what?!

That’s great. I was hoping to have some fresh faces (and legs). A pro friend of mine also let me know today he’s showing up, so it’s going to be HARD (his iron distance PB is comfortably under 9 hours). Hard is good.

Well, I was actually referring to myself, but we can always use more fat guys. You get enough fat guys on the road, and maybe we can flatten the climbs? Or at least empty the pool to take away the swimmers’ advantage. And, the secret, final stage is the beer bash, which we always win.

Sweeney, we’re all turning pro in 2008; this IS our work

You can show up for any stage you want. There’s no requirement to race them all.

In fact, for those of us doing them all, having to take on guys (and gals) with fresh legs will make the training that much better.

It also will lead to more complicated tactics for the stage race. Will a GC rider (runner / swimmer) chase a breakaway for mountain points or a stage win, if they’re not a GC threat? I know a local roadie climber who plans on kicking our asses on the final stage. Will we let him?

I have room for two or so at my place if anybody wants to crash.

Best food around these parts, and hills…

Sounds cool. I’m on the other side of the mountains from you guys, so can you post or PM some more details?
Exact locations, etc. I’d probably only be able to turn it into a long weekend though.

the draft I cause sucks up dogs and small children
.

I love your screen name. You might be interested to know that one of the race’s sponsors is McGovern & Macrae Pub (or does that stereotyping of the Irish make you angry?) Stage details will be firmed up and posted on the website, including start times and locations, etc… I hope you can join us for at least some of the fun. www.catskillmountainmultisport.com
