WOW! Bengals are on the verge of trading Palmer to Oakland for TWO first round picks.
Damn! IMO, too pricey for a QB whose performance has been down and has been considered to be losing arm strength.
Oakland* and Cincinnati are on the verge of completing one of the NFL’s biggest trade-deadline deals in decades, with the Raiders acquiring holdout quarterback Carson Palmer from the Bengals in exchange for two first-round picks, according to sources familiar with the deal.* The first first-round pick is in 2012 and the other is a conditional first-round pick in 2013. Palmer was in the Bay Area on Tuesday morning getting a physical before the deal could be completed. According to a source, if the Raiders win a playoff game in the 2011 season, the Bengals would get a first-round draft pick in 2013. If the Raiders don’t win a playoff game in the 2011 season then the Bengals would receive a second-round pick in 2013.
Desperate times eh? Carson was rated #16 in the 2010 QB rating so he’s not a bad QB but giving away 2 #1 picks for him is crazy unless he’s in shape and knows the Raider playbook. I thought Garrard would be a better pick and would come much cheaper but I guess he is going in for surgery.
I’m glad the Raiders are getting a QB but the price seems high.
But the Raiders haven’t been that adept at first round picks lately so maybe this keeps them from screwing up. They also seem willing to trade them away to get veterans (Seymour being the latest) so this kind of follows that trend.
Raiders were desperate after having their starting QB go down with a broken collarbone. Mike Brown on Sunday was quoted as saying he wouldn’t trade Carson, but I guess the price went high enough for his principals to change.
I had heard back at the beginning of the season that Carson was staying fit and working out, so he’s probably ready to go.
Absolutely Mike Brown got the better of the deal. He also got to see his rookie quarterback doing pretty good the first 6 games, makes it easier to dump an aging star. As if two first round picks isn’t enough reason.

I was unaware that mike brown was involved in the hiring decisions of the local school district?
About the only benefit I can see is not playing the steelers and the ravens 2x per year. Which for a QB is a pretty big benefit.
Good point. Hadn’t even considered that. Spending half your career staring across the line at Harrison, Suggs, Lewis, et al, can’t be good for the psyche.
If Aaron Rodgers went down tomorrow, I would never, never consider a deal like this. Never.
Yeah, well, what do you know about labor negotiations, anyway…
Palmer must feel like a kid on Christmas morning.
Think so? I mean, now he has to play for the Raiders. Isn’t this just leaving one type of crazy for another?
I think that would be the case were it Indy (I’m still shocked he didn’t go there the first week of the season). Oakland, not so much. However, he is from California so maybe that’s not so bad.
However, you are talking 2 first rounders (or a 1st and 2nd) for an aging QB. That is crazy.
31 is ‘aging’ for RB’s, but still prime for most QBs. Plenty of examples of QBs whose careers really took off after 30. Kurt Warner, etc.
Edit: And you have to ask yourself: “What would Al have done?” Would he make a reasoned decision based on a sober cost-benefit analysis, or would he say, “Eff it. This is the first time we’ve been good since our center got liquored up in TJ the night of the Super Bowl. I’m going long.”

Yeah but look at his numbers the last 5 years. Steady decline. Maybe the o-line and the running game of Oakland will help him over what the Bungles have had. With a good running game and lots of play-action that’s got to help a QB.
I can’t stand Mike Brown, can’t wait for him to finally give up and hire a GM instead of thinking he’s a good GM, but in this case he comes out like a genius, much as I hate to admit it.
He really hasn’t been the same since von oelhoffen got to him to be honest. But he might make it with the raiders. It will be interesting. Maybe DHB might learn to catch?
As a Charger fan, I welcome the QB upgrade at Oakland. If San Diego is really going to get back on top, they have to be able to play with the best. The Raiders just got better, they will be a lot tougher for the Chargers to beat, and those kinds of tests are what the Chargers need. I tell folks if they want to get faster they need to train with people faster than them. Same concept here - the better competition should help produce a better team.
