Carpal Tunnel From Bike?

Does anyone have any experience with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from riding? I think I am getting it and my doc says its likely from riding.

I don’t think I get carpal tunnel, but rather tendentious. Only comes form riding my road bike. Tri bike is always fine. As long as I keep my road bike rides to 1.5 hours or less it seems to be fine. Once I start going longer I notice problems.

it is possible. which fingers does it hit? Most cyclist I’ve seen have an ulnar nerve entrapment, not medial (carpal tunnel). Here’s a quick link:

THats interesting. But seems like its not quite it. My pinky finger is fine. Mostly my middle finger and some of my index finger. Its been getting worse for about two months now. I will bring up the ulnar nerve entrapment to my doc (who seems rather disinterested in this whole thing).

Just recently, I’ve been wondering the same thing.

About 1.5 years ago, I had to do PT treatment for DeQuervain’s syndrome (essentially, a thumb tendinitis) that developed in my right hand as a result of practicing yoga (of all things).

On road bikes, I have no issue. The shifting for me is more ergonomic.

But I just got a tri bike, and after longer rides, when I’m shifting a lot, with the bar-end shifters that are actuated by my thumbs, the tendons around my thumb are sore. It’s something I definitely have to monitor.

certain positions aggravate my carpal problems. Friend of mine was so in love with really aggressive s-bend extensions that he killed his forearms and ended up with really nasty carpal like conditions (probably just a strain) but was wrapping ice packs on both arms and wrists for 3 weeks…

Best to go to a hand specialist, probably won’t go away. They usually start with a steroid injection, it may take care of it. If not, the surgery is pretty easy. Just research the dr. wel beforehand.

CTS (Carpal Tunnal syndrome) is so overly used as a diagnoses it drives me nuts. A lot of doctors diagnose CTS with any numbness in the hand. the only way to know if it’s true CTS, median nerve entrapped in the carpal tunnal, it’s to do an EMG. there are so many other entrapments that cause numbness it all depends where and all that.

Knowing a lot about nerve entrapments and getting numbness in my hands riding myself, I can tell you that position has a lot to gdo with it. if it’s your index finger, it’s NOT Ulnar nerve which is coomonly entrapped in the tunnal of Guyon in cyclists. The position of your hand could be wrong, the nerve could be trapped in different spots, including the neck…
