Carbon Brakes

So i need carbon brake pads, anyone know if they make them for Cane Creek brakes!? our local distributor doesnt carry them and I need some so i dont damage my new wheels! Thanx

I’m pretty sure that Cane Creeks use Shimano pads.

ok, heres a better question then…Do regular pads have a long term affect over carbon rims?

Braking probably isn’t as good if you use regular pads on carbon rims.

What you should never do is to use carbon brake pads on aluminum rims, then switch to carbon rims. Aluminum will embed itself into the carbon brakepads, and then tear up your carbon rims when you use them with your carbon brakepads.

Either way, I highly recommend swiss-stop yellow king brakepads for carbon rims. Braking is as good as, if not even better than braking with aluminum rims.

I use Kool Stop Black pads for carbon rims on my Zipps and the feel and modulation is good. Definately get carbon specific pads what ever you do.

You might consider using Swiss Stop Flash Yellow pads for Shimano-compatible brakes (http://www.excelsports.com/new.asp?page=8&description=Brake+Pad+Flash+Yellow+Shimano+4pads&vendorCode=SWISSSTP&major=1&minor=8). they are a bit more expensive but can be used for wheels with alloy and carbon braking surfaces and do not suffer the problem of getting embedded bits of metal in the pads like Zipp and Kool Stop (which makes the Zipp pads).

Really? how do the Swiss keep the bits of Al off the surface? I understand that they are nice pads, and have never tried them jsut because I’ve been relatively happy witht the Kools, but if I did not have to change pads when I change wheels that woudl be worth a couple extra bucks.

ok so is it ok so use the original pads i had for my alu wheels right now then?? thats what i did last week and noticd a bit of marking around the braking area of the rims… do regular pads retain alu that can transfer over to the carbon rims when latr used?

I think regular brakepads also pick up aluminum bits, and while I’m not 100% sure about this, I wouldn’t risk it.

For the swiss-stop yellow kings, you have to wipe the brake pads properly between changes, but yeah, they can be used for normal alu rims too.

hmm…interesting I guess Ill get those brakes and see how they work, too bad they only come in yellow! lol thanx for the info
