SANDUSKY, Ohio – A 37-year-old man is dead following a crash on the Cedar Point Causeway in which he was ejected from his vehicle.
It happened at 8:10 p.m. Sunday as Gustava Walls, of Lakewood, was driving northbound on the Causeway. Authorities say Walls failed to negotiate a curve at a high rate of speed and went off the right side of the street. His 2007 Honda Accord then re-entered the roadway and collided with a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck and a 2015 Hyundai Elantra.
Both people inside the Hyundai were hurt as the vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage. The driver suffered a fractured left elbow while her passenger had pelvis and ankle injuries.
Nobody in the pickup truck was hurt.
Authorities say alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash. Walls was not wearing a seat belt.
At the time of the accident, the REV3 Triathlon was in progress on the Cedar Point Causeway. No participants or volunteers were injured.

Due to a serious vehicular accident on the Causeway at Cedar Point, we are forced to shut down the race. All athletes have been stopped at first street and the Causeway and we are working on a plan to transport the remaining athletes back to the finish line. As we have more details, they will be posted here. No athletes, volunteers or spectators were involved in the accident.

That’s a shame for everyone involved. I’ve heard that course can feel dodgy at times due to it not being closed off (Edit: ← apparently untrue, good to hear). I’m glad no racers or volunteers were injured but the accident sounds pretty bad for those in the other cars. I’'m trying to force myself to have some sympathy for the driver but I’ve dealt with the effects drunk drivers too many times to feel much past anger…

I’ve raced that event multiple times. Never have felt like the course was “dodgy” or anything. The causeway is about as easy to drive as an eight lane interstate.

Athletes were allowed to run out the finish distance on the side they were stopped on (mile 24 mark, roughly), then bused back to the park and allowed to cross the finish line.

Heart goes out to everybody involved, period.

Agreed 100% on lines 1 and 3. Wow.

I’m glad to hear on line 1 and I edited the post to correct myself. On 3, of course it goes out to everybody but if the news story holds true my hearts gonna go out a little less to the drunk driver. If I’m a lesser person for it then so be it, but I’ve lost friends to others making the same decision and it hurts me to think of the people going through the same grief right now.

Happy to hear people were allowed to finish. And to echo other people (and I know you edited your post), the car/runner interaction was never a problem on the causeway.

Does anyone know how timing was handled for those who couldn’t get by due to the accident?
