CapTexTri'10 oly swim length: 2000m?

Did anyone get a GPS measurement (e.g., Garmin in their cap) of the CapTexTri olympic swim course? The website says they erred and it was around 1800m, some of the locals think it was more like 2000m. It is a PR for me either way but I’d like to record the right value. I’m still horribly slow, but tracking progress helps keep up my motivation.

Thanks!

Talked to some people this morning, and word in Austin is that the swim was 300-400 long, and the run was .3-.5 miles long.

From the organizers: (Below is a quote)

  1. It looks as though we have made another Ooops in our course marking. The cones on the run course at mile 0.5 were not set correctly and instead of turning left when you came to Lee Barton that took you to the aid station at Jack and Adam's, the coning had you run all the way to Lamar and then come back to the turn. This mistake added about 0.2 miles to each lap.

  2. When the swim course was set, we made a user error with our GPS which resulted in a long course. Seems that the GPS's unit of measurement was set on nautical miles which resulted in the length actually being .92 nautical miles which is 1800 meters for the Olympic distance event.

Thank you. I had seen the captextri website mssg which put the swim at 1800m, but a local told me that was incorrect - it was more like 2000m. Seems the consensus is 1800-1900m. I was hoping for an actual measurement, but I’ll take the range.

Thanks again!

In before the Rappstar rant about correct course measurements.

There is a good reason why I don’t do this race anymore. . .

I think the best you can pin it down is about 1800-2000 yards. Looking at the open wave the swim times were most probably 4-5 minutes slow for the fast dudes. This was in kick ass swim conditions, cool water, no waves/chop, no current (afaik), wetsuit legal.

I think you’ll do much better by analyzing your performance relative to the rest of the field. This provides a more objective, race performance, evaluation and it also tends to factor our course length descriptions and conditional factors like heat.

I don’t do this race anymore because I moved, but I believe it’s pretty normal for this race to be measured inaccurately.

Still a great race.

Thanks for the analysis and suggestion. Does make sense to save the pace PRs for the pool, given the variables, and focus on placement during the races. Ok.
