Canyon Concept Speedmax 2012

For the European STers:

Just got introduced:

They’re finally catching up with Trek etc.

Yep, fully-integrated brakes, Kamm tails (I think they call it ´Trident tubing´), looks a very nice bike indeed.

Looks like a speed concept with canyon logo. They’ve taken every single solution suggested by Trek actually.
But then being copied is a form of appreciation and recognition

Couldn´t agree more. Bet it´s one fast bike (unless I´m on it, of course…)

I liked my Speedmax a lot, wish I hadn´t sold it now really. I just couldn´t justify getting a whole new set of 650b race wheels at the time. Plus, I could never get the shifting to index properly (but that was comletely my fault, not the components).

Looks very nice…

I think they’ve tried to copy Trek, I don’t think the results will quite be the same in the tunnel; but thats just a guess.

How many of us ride @ 60-70 km/hr? Didn’t they say that is the speed at which they say the airflow changes to take advantage of the Kamm / Trident tubing.

I think we’ve go to the point where it’s redundant to argue about who copied who - as long as UCI rules are in place bikes should be trending towards the ideal solution and if the SpeedConcept is the best so far then a lot of bikes are going to look like the SpeedConcept.

But…if we’re talking about history…Canyon were way ahead of Trek when it came to integrated brakes:

Read it more carefully. They claim the NACA tubing doesn’t ‘reach’ its true potential until 70 kmh. In other words, NACA profiles are better ABOVE 70 kmh than they are below.

As far as it being a ‘copy’ of the Trek… Get a grip people, the SpeedConcept is the godawful ugliest TT bike out there. What is with that ‘stem’ thing, anyway? Hideous, hideous, hideous.

At least there is some ‘grace’ in Canyon’s design.

Finally, aerodynamic efficiency of a design can NOT be determined by looking at a few pictures on the internet…

.

Are we ever going to get some Canyon vendors is the United States? Or at least an online retailer?

Actually I was referring to what the engineer said in the interview…upon a second viewing, he said that at speed UP to 60-70 KPH, not AT 60-70 kph. My bad.

They were available until 2008 (Maybe longer but I know for sure until 2008) at least over phone but they stopped supplying the US. They announced distributing them again to the US in 2013… Can’t find the link right now for a reference

I heard that Competitive Cyclist was going to be their online dealer. I liked their e-commerce only approach if it means I’ll save 30%, but if this sucker is going to cost the same as all the other super bikes then I’d rather go to the LBS and get a proper fit and build.

Only on my easy days

As far as copying; let me get my sarcastic voice out, “I’m sure Canyon would have used cut off airfoils even if trek hadn’t. It just so happens their development was pre-empted by about 3 years.” I point this out below, but in some circumstances, a smaller budget company does well to just copy a big player. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just proper for recognition to go where it is due.

I made the claims that I think it will be slower than the Speed Concept, not so much based on looks, though the headtube does look fatter on the Canyon and the seattube/stay cluster looks poorly done, but more based on the fact that Canyon has a poor track record with aero development(the aeroad tested slower than many non aero bikes in a recent impartial test) and that they just don’t have the development budget Trek has.

I actually look forward to Canyon coming to the U.S. market, they get fantastic reviews.

I wouldn’t feel too badly for TREK, they were the company that had a distributer pretend to be a triathlete and buy a Walser to copy for one of their TT bikes.

Styrrell

none of the top bikes use, exactly, naca tubing anyway.
it has been modified for bike speeds and yaw angles, for precisely that reason.

You were right (Competitivecyclist will be selling Canyon bikes):

They look rather good.
Where was the photo taken? I should know, but will ask anyway - which Pro team is on Canyon now?
