because they don’t have pie plates! whatever next?
Is this a CYA situation? Why Connondale? I thought most high end bikes didn’t come with these; I know mine didn’t.

I’m sure someone bought a bike, had a bad derailleur adjustment and fell when the RD when into the spokes. Someone said “Hey, why doesn’t it have this nifty spoke protector like mine does?”, and a lawsuit was born.

It’s still two weeks until April 1st. (Can this possibly be serious?)
Chatter is very happy that this does not apply to her.
**Incidents/Injuries: **None reported.
According to the terms of my settlement I had to let them claim that.
Don’t tell me you’ve still got that pie plate on there. Jeez, people will think you’re Canadian or something.

I call it the dork ring. My 2009 Super Six didn’t come with one either. It did have reflectors, but I think something must have happened to them.
Cannondale should be applauded for not including the dork disc. After all it is a major hassle to remove the mandatory “spoke protector” and the wheel reflectors from a new bike. So those folks who take their bikes back for the “big” recall might as well show up in those bike shops with a dunce hat.
Big thumbs up to Cannondale.
They’re doing this so we all can get the full joy of prepping our store bought bikes:
Step 1: Remove reflectors
Step 2: Install high-end bottle cages
Step 3: Remove spoke protector (C-dale users missed out on this)
Step 4: File “lawyer tabs” off of fork
.
Egads. These and reflectors probably aren’t bad ideas for everyday consumer bikes, but they are a little ridiculous for high end racing bikes. I still have to laugh at the “pose a falling hazard”. Uh, should all bikes come with some sort of training wheels? I’m sure there are a few cases of parents suing bike manufacturers because their child fell off their bike while learning to ride it.
Wait, you can go faster than 10 mph on a bike?!
These things are dangerous and out of control. They MUST be stopped!
BAN BIKES!

This sounds like a scheme for free advertisement.
We all know that you don’t need that little plastic POS.
Furthermore, why recall the product when you could mail the plastic POS to those who have registered their bikes and/or send plastic POSs to LBSs for installation on those bikes missing the plastic POS?
I use them…as drink coasters.
All bike shops are required to have the tard guards and reflectors installed on the bikes at the point of sale. Once the bike is yours you can ask that the offending items be removed. I usually ask buyers of higher end bikes if they want the disk and reflectors removed, whats interesting is the number who dont…

I’ve seen people at races with very nice bikes and triathlon related bumper stickers on their car and their bikes had spoke reflectors.

The disk, I can see. Reflectors are easy to take off, and many of us do in fact ride a lot at night/early in the morning. Some extra visibility certainly doesn’t hurt, and they’re easy to pull off before a race, if you race on those wheels.
I just did a training camp in Spain and one of the riders showed up with a Cannondale with a spoke protector on it. Mysteriously after the first day of riding with the group it disappeared as he must have taken it off that night.
On the next to last day we were doing a ride with some steep climbs and I had switched cassettes. Going through a small Spanish town we had a real short steep climb and I shifted into my easiest climbing gear. Unfortunately in switching cassettes I had messed up my limit screw and I got my chain stuck between the spokes and the back of the cassette in the middle of a town on a steep (10-15%) one way road with cars parked on both sides. Fell right over and it took about 10 minutes for 2 of us to get the chain dislodged while the rest of the group waited at the top of the hill.
