I get them from Ironman perform drink
.
It can happen as a result of extra stress and the beating your immune system takes.
If I do something that causes stress, yep, canker sores.
.
I have had issues with canker sores over the years and was really having a bad time with them over the past five years, seems like I always had one and sometimes as many as three, pretty miserable. My Dr. was of no help and I just thought it was something in my body getting out of balance when I was training. About 6 months ago I quit a high pressure retail management job that I had for 8.5 years. Guess what? I have not had one since. For me stress had to be the issue.

+1. It’s a depressed immune system. The virus that causes the sores is there, and is not “held in check” when your immune system is weak or overstressed due to an intense event like a long race.

I think you have canker sores confused with cold sores. Canker cores are not caused by a virus, cold sores are, the herpes virus. Canker sores are a common mouth ulcer and remarkably, the exact cause of them is unknown.
Stress.
Assuming you mean cold sore on your lip. I don’t get them after races but they pop up periodically. I use a topical ointment called Zovirax. You need a prescription for it. If I can catch the cold sore before it starts (usually can feel a tingling in my lip) it will stop it right away or at least keep it really small. If one is already on the way, wake up with it, it helps dry it out and heal quicker.
If you always get one after a long race, maybe try the Zovirax a couple of days before the race and it may help prevent or at least minimize it.

Stay out of T3.
I got hand foot and mouth disease a few years ago (wife is an elementary school teacher) and had a mouthful of them. Incidentally, our little daughter’s daycare just posted a note that kids in her room were exposed to it so we’re waiting and crossing our fingers she (and then we) don’t get it.
Lysine. The cold sore miracle supplement, I kid you not.
Abreva also works and is over the counter. Same manufacturer and intended as a replacement for Zovirax. I get cold sores when training volume peaks along with stress. We can combat the exposure at that point. I also get canker sores really bad under the same conditions and when I don’t watch my diet. Highly acidic processed foods like diet soda kicks me off. I crave diet 7up for some reason and will give in occasionally. Two days of soda intake and there it goes. That’s a trigger for me. Might be different for someone else.
Since it is Herpes simplex virus, it is always best to keep Valtrex in a house. It goes away with one pill.
It is also very stress driven. races stress out the immune system.
Amazing how many people are responding with cold sore explanations. :-/
Below are expected causes of canker sores. Stress is one of them. Inflammation looks like it is also a likely culprit. I get them too, but I’m sure it is from all the sugary crap I drink/eat during an IM (which causes inflammation) combined with the stress. But for me it is mostly the sugary crap/Perform, because I drink a lot less of that stuff during workouts, and I stress my body more but for less time, and never get canker sores.

As a lifetime sufferer from cancer soars, what caused most of them for me was drinking acidic liquids, and gave up orange juice which was the main culprit for me. rarely get them any more.

Toothpaste, mouthwash. Both can contain it. If yours does, try a different brand to help.
Valtrex. Start a course before the race.
Actually, several viruses do cause canker sores in the mouth. While herpes is widely known to cause cold sores, they actually do cause canker sores in the mouth, especially with a person’s first exposure to the disease. Hand foot mouth disease/coxsackie virus also causes canker sores. Canker sores can be caused by a multitude of things including stress, trauma, foods/drinks, viral and with your body already in shock from an endurance event the effect any of those factors on your body will be multiplied.
My gut feeling is that when you have sores all over the mouth it is usually viral in origin and it makes sense you would get them after an Ironman as your immune system will have been depressed. I’ve gotten them all over my mouth once and it was the most pain thing i’ve ever dealt with.
