Cancelled 70.3 Taupo World Champs 2022

From Ironman Social Media…

“The uncertainty brought about by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to provide challenges for both our athletes and events. Which is why it is with immense sadness that we must advise that based on current international border and travel restrictions, the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship cannot take place as planned on 10-11 December 2022 in Taupō.
We understand what a frustrating outcome this will be for our athletes. Please know that we undertook careful consultation with local partners and authorities and with the information we have to date, and to provide sufficient notice to our athletes and the community of Taupō, it became clear that this was the only sensible option to ensure the best possible World Championship experience for you, the local community and event stakeholders.
Further to this, the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission taking place in St. George, Utah will shift to a single-day event with both the men and women now racing on Saturday 18 September 2021.
The decision not to hold the event in Taupō in 2022 means the global athlete community will get a second opportunity to race in St. George, Utah, as it will also host the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship with a two-day format taking place in October 2022.
We are continuing to work closely with all stakeholders to secure a new race date for Taupō, New Zealand. Updates on a decision will be shared as soon as possible, including a selection of options for qualified athletes to give each of you the best opportunity to use your hard-earned slot.
Thank you for your commitment, patience and understanding through this process.”

Gutted for us here in Aotearoa but kind of inevitable.

Just saw the email. Was going to race through that race and call it good.

Bummed not to get to hang out with you and Sam.

You’ll just have to keep training for another year or two  I’m sure the LOC will push to acquire another WC at somepoint in the next couple of years, everybody here is super motivated to make it happen. There’s always a room here for you as I’ve said before.

We’ll all race again.

They’re going to hold 70.3 and IM world champs the same month next year?

Just got the email notification, but came away unsure what race I am registered for, as there is not a specific mention of a registration transferring the the 2022 race in StG. Did I miss something?

How lame of Ironman to change the date of the women’s race so late… people have travel and accommodation already booked… some women who were racing on Friday likely planned to leave on Saturday!

Way to screw them all up!

Geez. How negative is that by either IM or NZ.
Sacking off the Dec 2021 race I get.
But 2022 ? FFS it’s 16 months away. If we’re still under restrictions in 16 months on the ‘civilised’ World then the economies really are fecked.

This is the biggest issue in my mind. Many women will be f-d for accommodations and flights. I’m wondering if there will be a staggered start to the race, as there are a lot more people racing than when it wasn’t on split days. Personally, I have a red-eye out of Vegas on Saturday night, so I think I’ll still be fine.

Oh really?

I mean 16 months from now. Not 16 months ago. Ie basically a doubling on the economic damage compared to what has been done already to date.

New Zealand just went into complete lockdown for 1 covid case.

Yes they have managed for next to no deaths from Covid, but it seems they want to be isolated for the next 2 years.

So happy I don’t live there. It’s like they are in jail

This. One of the main countries that would be flying in still has a good chunk of the population that doesn’t think COVID exists. There is no way they are letting a 3000 people in for a race anytime soon.

Well I am about to do a qualifer in 12 days for 2022. I was quite unsure about worrying about trying to get a NZ 70.3 slot, but if it is in St. George in 2022, should I get lucky enough, then I will take it.

Happy to go back to NZ (are we talking 2024 now?) should I qualify again! It never felt like NZ would be opening things up early enoough for there to be any certainty of an international event by next Nov.

maybe, but its a pretty nice jail:
full freedom within one of the best countries in the world (until today, hopefully to return soon)i just got back from a holiday in the cook islands - an even more amazing placeno overseas tourists crowding the place so we can actually enjoy itmy parents are still alive
i’ve not generally been a big supporter of many aspects of the way the nz government has handled this situation but through a combination of luck and management we have ended up in a pretty good situation.

as has been said, if the last 18 months has shown us anything, it is that when dealing with something not seen in over 100 years you can’t predict what will happen.
NZ has plans to gradually reopen next year but it is sensible from IM to give certainty rather than repeat the shambolic late changes around this year’s events

Um, that’s my point. We were all saying the same shit 16 months ago.

Hopefully the red eye is planned properly so you can lose the inheritence of your kids at the Bellagio or Venetian before the flight home

Well this kinda blows. I really wanted do to NZ in 2020. Then I was looking forward to 2022. I was planning to qualify for WC NZ 2022 in Memphis, right after doing this year’s St. George. At the moment, I don’t feel like doing STG 2 years in a row. Now looking forward to Finland.

I really hope that NZ gets it in 2024.

I would happy spend my time in jail there. Better than living here in CA for sure as this country will be suffering for years with Covid

It’s easy to be critical about New Zealand’s covid response from afar but you only have to look at how quickly things can get out of hand. If proper measures are not taken rapidly numbers of infected and associated deaths quickly escalate such as is currently taking place in New South Wales in Australia.

No doubt many of us were not best pleased at going in to lockdown last night for just one identified case. But now there are seven identified and linked cases. And who knows how many more?

Short term pain for long term gain has worked well here before. Chances are it’s going to work again.

I’d rather be in jail well and healthy. Not a fan of the alternative.

Disappointing that they’re keeping it in St. George for 2022 but I can understand wanting to be in a well tested course that’s unlikely to lockdown. Still it would be nice to give another venue a chance and it seems there’s plenty of areas in the US that would be great locations.
