Ok I had a huge brain fart idea today harkening back to the best long ride treat I have ever had in my life: Macintosh Toffee. It was the summer of '89 and I brought maybe 30 of them back from a fishing trip and found out they made great pick me ups towards the end of a long ride. I have found a few sites with little bags of tiny pieces, but I want the old sugar blaster version below!
My Mom used to make this treat with them when I was a kid…she’d melt a couple of bars in a pot and then add some corn flakes to the mixture. Cornflake Clusters I think they were called. Oh. My. Those clusters kick the snot out of Rice Krispie Treats! Hahahaha!
I lost many a tooth on those suckers back in the day. They were awesome when you put them in the freezer and then take them out and whack them on the table. Cold treat that melts and then gets chewy…mmmmmmmm.
I was going to reply with a resounding YES! but another post made me wonder if I had missed something… It seems that ~M is correct: http://www.nestle.ca/en/FAQ/chocolate.htm#10
Q. Why am I having difficulty finding MACKINTOSH’S MACK TOFFEE bar?
We are sorry to inform you that MACKINTOSH’S MACK TOFFEE bar is no longer available. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to continue producing the bar where MACK Toffee was being made. Recognizing its heritage and popularity in Canada, we worked hard to find a suitable manufacturing facility but we’re unable to do so and had to finally discontinue manufacturing in the bar format. We encourage you to try MACK TOFFEE in our 170g cello bag (found to be equivilant to 3 bars), which is available as usual at your local store. The cello bag is also great for baking and easy to substitute by replacing 7 toffee pieces for every 56 g bar in your recipe.
That stuff was great. I just had a flashback to losing a tooth filing while eating some. If I recall the tag line in the commercial was “Give the pack a whack Jack” and they would slap the toffee box on the table. I’ll keep an eye out next time we hit up Sugar Mountain. They carry all the “retro candy” from my youth Cheers.
the bag form singles are nothing like the original. the taste is completely wrong. like the other poster i put mine in the freeze then whacked them to death. even if you put the new bite sized ones in the freezer still not even remotely the same.
I was wondering about those a few months ago. They were exhausting to eat, really hard on the teeth and jaws so when they were hard I would just smash them up into bits.
I’m looking to find some of the old Mackintosh toffee bars for my dad’s birthday. He grew up in Buffalo and would always get them as treats for my brother and me when we were younger. Unfortunately I’m having trouble with that Banff Candy site - if anyone has seen them around in local stores or knows of a link online could you please send me a message? This would make his birthday if I could get my hands on a few of those bars.
