Can you still get an automatic entry into NYC Marathon based on a 1/2 marathon time?

Do they still have that? I know they did a few years back but I haven’t seen anything about it lately. If so what are the qualifying standards for a 50+ male? Seems like that would be the way to go.

I believe these times are still accurate (can’t say whether that will still hold for '09):

For 18-39:
Men 1:23
Women 1:37

For 40+:
Men 1:30
Women 1:44

For 50+:
Men 1:40
Women 1:50

For 60+:
Men 1:48
Women 2:00:30

.

Well, you could have done that for 2007 (a 1:40 half would have gotten you in), but I haven’t seen anything for 2008. It’s possible that things changed this year due to their 50th anniversary?? For 2009, they are just listing being a member of the NYRRC and doing at least 9 of their races. Perhaps you want to check their website after this year’s race?

Here’s the old info:

http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/applyfor2007_new.php

They had the same deal for 2008:

                                 Marathon Half-Marathon

Men (18-39) 2:55:00 1:23:00
Women (18-39) 3:23:00 1:37:00

Men (40+) 3:10:00 1:30:00
Women (40+) 3:38:00 1:44:00

Men (50+) 3:30:00 1:40:00
Women (50+) 3:52:00 1:50:00

Men (60+) 3:45:00 1:48:00
Women (60+) 4:13:00 2:00:30

Men (70+) 4:00:00 1:55:00
Women (70+) 4:35:00 2:11:00.

How many on this board have raced NYC?

I’ve done it. In 2001. Best marathon I’ve ever done…the others for comparison are Marine Corps, LA, Shamrock (va beach), and Long Beach. It also was the slowest, but that’s irrelevant…I ran it with two close friends of varying abilities and we stayed together from start to finish.

NYC had an energy that was simply unbelievable. Doing it in 2001, right after the tragedy of 9/11, and seeing how the entire city of New York came together during that time was really amazing. One of the best sporting experiences of my life.

I have done it, but didn’t race it. Just went last year because I really wanted to watch the men’s Olympic Trials marathon. Since I had a qualfying time, I entered and ran it just for the experience and it was quite an experience.

Did it in 2003 and qualified for Boston.
Came back in 2004 in great shape to race it and I dehydrated, crashed & burned big time with splits of 1:34 & 2:24. It was probably the warmest race in years and my singlet was wet by mile 2.
I hated the logistics of having to get up 4 hours before a race, and get bused, and sit for hours waiting for the start.
NYC is one of those experience things you should maybe do once or twice and never do again. I’ll stick to smaller races I can walk to the start from now on.

If I ever do a marathon again, NYC will be it. I “retired” from marathons a few years ago…I actuallly find doing them in Ironmans easier, and I find the higher volume high tempo running required to do a marathon is actually harder than IM marathon training…so as a measure of self preservation, I have bailed on marathons…but there is always a draw to do NYC-London-Berlin if my knees feel like they are 30 again!

I’ve done it 4 times. Back in the early 80’s when thousands of people would wait outside the main post office on 34th St to get their application stamped with 12:00AM, to ensure entry. The line went around the block. Good times.

Raced it? For me, that is a state of mind. My best is 2:45, and although I could say I raced it, I blew up around 18 and struggled home.
