Can triathlon be more like Track & Field in the Olympics
Sure it would be great to see. Perhaps even include Duathlon. However, the sport of triathlon is still relativly new to the Olympic games and had to do a lot of arm twisting just to get in, so they are not likley to want to rock the boat. Also the IOC seems to be at one time, wanting to expand the games by adding new sports while at the same time scaling the overall size of the games back by asking some sports organizations to eliminate some events within that sport. So I don’t know how well going to the IOC at this point and asking to add more events for triatholon would be a good thing. I don’t see the addition of anything new on the multi-sport front over the short to mid term.
IIRC, the host nation gets to pick a demonstration sport. If the sport does well, it can become a permanent part of the Olympics. You need some country to host the Olympics that is really good at tri and lousy at other stuff. Maybe Belgium.

To the best of my knowledge this does not go on anymore. You are either on the offcial Olympic program with full medal status or you are not. Now, Games organizing committees have some leeway in including sports in some form of cultural celebration that is going on in comjunction with the Games, but these sports or events are not in anyway recognized by the IOC.
Summer Olympic Games participation capped at around 10,500.
Demonstration sports ceased to exist after Seoul in '88.
If a new sport enters the Olympic program then another sport must be dropped.
The IOC abhors the Ironman distance. They’re medical people have come out against it.
Logistics - multiple venues needed for multiple days - more costs to LOC/OCOG.
There’s no 1/2 marathon in the Olympics.
There’s no road 5K or 10K in the Olympics.
Triathlon is being dropped from Commonwealth Games in 2010. Discussions surround 2018 also indicate the sport could be gone.
The Olympic draft legal triathlon is already the most spectator friendly version of the sport, and it’s almost as long time wise as the marathon, the longest event in track and field. There really is no reason for them to want to add another distance. IM, what, 8 to 10 hrs, why would they?
I don’t know? I kinda disagree…
Ironman is so popular right now amongst people who hardly know much about triathlon,in fact every time anyone I know hears that I’m a triathlete, they ask if I’ve done “Ironman”.
I think out of all the distances the olympic & ironman distance would go over well in the olympic games.
I’m no fan of the Ironman distance, but hey I love to watch those races.
I would personally like to see inline skating and the team time trial (cycling) in the olympics program. The TTT should be a four man team and 80K long (it’s too bad they actually removed this event)! I would also like the see a head-race style rowing event which is basically a long time trial for rowers.
Me too…
I used to ride in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. There were a lot of hardcore cyclists and inline skaters.
There was this guy Sheldon , some Rasta guy who was phenomonal on those inline skates , he used to ride with the peloton around the loop.
He was a monster cyclist too.
