Can neoprene shrink?

I’ve lost 25 lbs since I bought my wetsuit. All of my clothes are too big on me. My wetsuit, however, is too tight all over. Is it possible it has shrunk over the last year?

I think so. Mine has shrunk too.

emilio gave the tip of getting your suit wet in the bathtub a few days prior to use. Are you trying it on dry?

So you are 25LBS lighter and the wetsuit which was fitting is not fitting now?

Are you sure you picked up the right wetsuit from transition at the last race???

They do “shrink” over the winter. My scuba suits used to do it as well as the tri suit. Dump them in a basin of water and let them soak for awhile before putting them on while wet. They’ll stretch back out again.

thats true but it is a slight tightness, he says he lost 25LBS and it is not fitting.

could be that the weight lost was in the midsection but the muscle gained is in the shoulders and chest?

Not to be rude: are you sure you’re pulling the suit on correctly, all the way to the crotch, etc?

Thanks. I’m going to try soking it. Hope it works.

I posted this question about a year and a half ago and the responses, while few, were interesting.

It’s the enzyte making it tight!

what is enzyte? never heard of it.

Edit: Nevermind. Another form of Viagra…Got it. Yep, that’s it. That’s what the tightness is from and the rug burn.

As a wetsuit wearer since 1979, I can tell you that yes, wetsuits do “shrink” a bit when they completely dry out. Getting it wet again will bring some of the flexibility back to the neoprene.

but if they shrink when they dry out, wouldn’t they be the ‘shrunken’ size when new?

or does this only happen once you start using it?

Good question! I believe exposure to the UV makes the material more brittle, so when they’re new, they’re still supple, but after a few months of use, the brittleness they aquire after being exposed to the sun really reveals itself when they dry out.
