I’m thinking of buying Tri bike but I prefer road bike brake lever over TT brake lever. Is there a way to install the road bike brake lever to the base bar?
I know there’re people asking about changing base bar to drop bar in this forum. But I just want the brake lever, don’t need the drops.
Yes, but you need a tri basebar with the curved end. If it’s a straight pipe there won’t be enough room to pull the lever.
There’s two ways to do it, first is keep the basebar with the curves flared up and put the brake levers as high up as they’ll fit. This gives you brake levers in the typical TT style location but no access to the hoods. Second is to flip the basebar upside down and mount so that the levers are hanging off the bottom (but fully connected at the clamp, of course). This basically replicates a drop bar position, but without the ‘drop bar’ section of handlebars at the bottom.
Be advised that this setup is a fair bit slower than actual TT levers, and if you drop the bike the levers are exposed and can break/bend pretty easily.
Could just buy a cheap aluminum drop best and cut it. The aero penalty from wing to round in the top section won’t be as bad as having road levers out there.
You probably Can, But why?
Flat bar lever would probably be easier to install
Yeah, the only thing I can figure is they perhaps are thinking they like the comfort of road bike hoods over tri bike brakes and bullhorns.
But is a fallacy as it defeats the point of spending the least time in that area as possible.
I “get it” in a super low budget situation where you already own spare brifters. In this situation, where they say they are acquiring this and simply ‘prefer it’, it’s not sound reasoning really. Budget is sound, the preference otherwise isn’t.

The hoods were my first thought, But I cant really get around How they would be installed in order to be usable on a tt bar. Road brakes are more comfortable on the lever, being wider. But in any case, I Think with Road shifters, if it’s the hood thats the deciding factor, a better solution might be installing a narrow drop bar and cut the drops below the shifters and some clip on bars. That might be beneficial when climbing out of the saddle. But since I live somewhere very flat, climbing for anything more than a couple og minutes isnt really a thing here (so decents arent either), I havent done much though into comfort around brake levers on a tt bike, as long as its not too awkward
