Has anyone had experience hiring a bike rack from a car hire company in France? I’ve tried the major car hire companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget) but none do. I’m not familiar with all the car hire companies in France, and thought one of them might given it’s such a popular pastime.
I was hoping to leave the bike box in left luggage and rack the bike, otherwise I’ll need a truck!
I have never been able to. But have usually rented a mini-van / station wagen type vehicle so that it wasn’t an issue. Renault makes a nice wagon and also a small mini-van that easily fits a couple bikes. Try to get a Renault Espace. If you are trying to save money the hatch back is good, but can only carry two people & two bikes. it’s called a Megane.
Thanks cidewar. It may have to be the Espace, even though it’s more expensive, as I’ll be travelling with the family (wife and 2 young children) and space is at a premium.
I might take my own bike rack and add that to our all ready overburdened luggage allowance.
Maybe I could try smtyrrell99’s idea and duct tape the family to the roof instead, well the wife at least!! She should be fine with just a blanket up there; “Are we there yet?” … “It wont be long, just 2 more mountain passes. Duck! Tunnel ahead!”.
I wonder if Gerrard would advise against putting a soloist in the front seat of a car if the dashboard has an airbag?
