I’ve got a dog that has a lot of energy - his several walks a day isn’t enough. I’d like to mount a dog leash to my mountain bike and let him run along side my bike for a mile or two to burn off some energy.
Amazon has a couple in the $100+ range, but I thought I’d see if anyone here has experience with any of them.
My dog is a spaniel mix and weighs about 25 pounds, so I don’t need something to hold a 100 pound dog.
I got this for my Doberman and I’ve been very happy with it. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OYIAW4
She is 55 lbs and made entirely of legs, lungs and teeth. I took her on my wife’s “mom cruiser” bike and we passed a roadie!
dont do it. the dog can pull run in another direction instantly and rip you off the bike, or dog runs between street sign pole and you. Better just holding leash in hand to just let go in emergency.
That’s what popped into my head as well. The dog is 25 lbs, so not that heavy. If the riding trails are wide and not busy, I imagine the dog will learn how to run along side the bike. If it were me, I’d use this as an excuse to get some inline skates.
NO Dont do it. Do you really think even riding at 10mph that you can control a 25 pound dog? Think about the people you might RUN into while riding. Yea this happened to us on a recent training ride.
Another person who would recommend against it. I tried it as a kid, only to see my dog killed by a car, right in front of my eyes. I’ve never revisited this. I do however, run with my dogs on leash, every day, and have for many years. Thousands of miles, and I’m still in awe of how many ways they can get into trouble. Even at 6 miles an hour, I often have only fractions of a second to react to bikes/cars/other dogs/hazards/etc. My recommendation would be to run with your dog, instead of bike. One hard 4-6 mile run, and my dogs are trashed for the rest of the day. They also look forward to it, like you wouldn’t believe. Best training partners for consistency, you could ever want.

Thanks in advance for recommendations.
Don’t do it. Besides everything else other people have said, please mind other road/cycling lane/trail users.
Rather than risking your, your dog, and others life, limb, etc. by doing this foolish thing of trying to ride a bike with him on a leash, why not take your dog to a dog park or run with him?
Don’t do it. It is not fair to the dog. You are focused on the ride and not on how tired your dog gets. I have seen people doing it, riding away and the dog is struggling to keep up but they don’t see it. Even a slow ride for you may be a fast run for the dog. Taking a dog for a walk/run is about the dog, not your ride.
Put me firmly in the “Don’t do it!” camp. Take your dog for longer walks or play ball or frisbee as an alternative. Even running with your dog can be fraught. I broke a couple ribs while running with my dog when he was spooked by another dog in a parked car and swerved in front of me.

I’ve been running with our dog, and my husband actually suggested having the dog pull our young son on scooter. Holy hell!
I guess you could put padding everywhere and wear a helmet, but I don’t know how you can avoid broken bones from a big wipe out.
A perfectly trained dog might be able to run a clean line without distractions and while maintaining an even speed. But actually, that describes a motor, not an animal. Just get a motorized bike and leave the animal out of it.
do it if your dog is extremely well trained. but then again, if they are extremely well trained, you wouldn’t need it.
my dog used to run behind my bike when i rode on trails, no issues. you just need to be respectful as a dog owner. if someone was coming up, i would always pull over, regardless of who had the right of way. i would then leash my dog up until they passed.
whenever we had to cross the street, i would walk the dog and bike, not because i needed to, but you just never know. and whenever we had to ride on any pavement trails to get somewhere, i would hold his leash in my hand with my pinky and index finger. that way if anything happened, we wouldn’t be tied to each other. never had an issue.
mtb is a great way to tire a dog out. in fact, it was the ONLY way to tire my boy out. just be cautious on temperature etc. he has since passed (this june, at 16 years of age), but we have a 6 year old lab/cattle dog mix who has even more energy. 12-13 mile mtb rides are a yog in the park for her. just be cautious of your speed when mtb on green trails, i find they get WAY more tired on green trails than blacks, because we are going faster, thus they have to be consistently fast. think of it as running a bunch of 400 meter sprints with easy walk breaks, vs running 13miles at race pace. dogs are totally made for sprinting over endurance.
