Was reading an old edition of Outside where Landis was talking about wheeling on his road bike and then taking the front wheel off. Tried to get the front wheel up yesterday but even in a large gear couldn’t get it past a centimeter or two.
Must take mad power (and balance) to pull a full wheelie. Would be a sick way to impress the ladies though…
Yeah, he was famous for that. I used to have a picture of it, but I can’t find it. Does anyone have a pic? IIRC, it was taken at a San Francisco race at the top of a hill.
I don’t have any pics, but I seem to recall reading something about Landis riding a no-handed wheelie up hill during a Postal training ride. Fricking kids…
Remember the TT up Mt. Ventoux a few years back? I believe it was Robbie McEwen who pulled a wheelie across the finish, flicking the sweat from his brow. That was cool.
Easy to do if you did it as a kid on your BMX. I still bunny hop my road bike over railroad tracks and up curbs with little effort and land it softly. MTB bike same thing but I can do it higher. Wheelies are fun as well and once you have the wheel up, you can take one hand off with little issues. I do not push it too much while being clipped in but if you have runners on then wheelie away.
It just takes practice to do it. You want a low gear so you can generate a tone of torque quickly. Shift your weight back and pull up on the bar and put the torque out. Then it’s just a matter of working on finding the balance point. When you get really good at them you can do them at speed and Manual…which is a wheelie without pedaling.
Oh and if you start to flip over backwards grab the brake, that’ll push the front back down.
It’s easy to do, just takes practice. Also a really handy skill to have on a MTB.
big deal, I am doing one right now on my tri bike while typing this on my BB
Have not tried it in years but used to be able to ride one for a long way on my fuji 10 speed back in junior high. As mentioned by someone else once you develop the skill on a bmx bike as a kid it can used on all bikes. After you learn that you can start practicing sweet jumps…
McEwen grew up BMX’ing and Landis mountain biking… hence the ability to do manuals or wheelies… although I don’t think Landis can do one-handed wheelies like McEwen can!
I love when Adam Craig does front wheelies (or whatever they’re called when you ride with the rear wheel in the air) over the finish line in MTB races… that’s mad cool!

I can get a wheelie going but I’m not going to take the front wheel off. I don’t want to die.
Well, we know Landis can do one-handed wheelies by extension of the fact that he can take off his front wheel while doing a wheelie. How else would he get the wheel off?
