Can anybody bike faster at altitude?

Hey all,

So how does the altitude/drop in performance/drop in air resistance pan out? Anybody compare threshold watts/speeds at altitude vs. sea level?

I can go about 24.3 mph on 200 watts at about 7200 feet. The bike calculators on-line say my speed will drop about 2 mph at those watts at sea level. Will my watts at a given RPE/%threshold go up enough at sea level to compensate? I have not played with my power meter at sea level…

Are all the cycling records set at sea level?

Dave

Merckx did it first. Had to breathe pure oxygen in the weeks prior to Mexico City.

The French guy (Tornaut?) who broke 1min in the 1KM TT (track) a couple of years ago did it at high altitude (Mexico city, I believe). He and his team went there for the specific purpose of breaking the record.

Pure oxygen? Where’d you hear that?

I think you may have it wrong. It is my understanding that he breathed a lower than normal O2 mix while training on a trainer/roller to get his body ready for the lower O2 found at altitude. David K

“nonsense”

My point exactly.
