Campy Eurus 06 vs Mavic Ksyrium ES?

The time has come to upgrade my Easton Velomax Circuits, which were stock on the Soloist. The Eurus’ get good reviews from previous years and the Ksyriums appear to be a perennial favourite.

I’ll be using them pretty much all the time, both training and racing. I live in a hilly area and will also be riding them in the French Alps this summer, so a good all round wheelset with a focus on climbing is the idea. In a perfect world, I would prefer a set of Zipp 202s for the hills and 404s for the flats with a disc for time trials, but alas, my world is far from perfect and $1000 is my budget this time around.

The Eurus and Ksyrium ES clinchers are very similar in many respects:

Price $1,000 for both, give or take change.

Bladed spokes for both.

Weight 1495 (Campy) & 1485 (Mavic)

Rim section front 24 (C) & 22 (M)

Rim section rear 28 (C) & 25 (M)

Have any ST’s used the new 2006 versions of either of these wheels? Thoughts otherwise?

Thanks,

JK

Check out these: Eurus at $600. Good deal. I recently bought a pair myself.

That is a great deal. Obviously clearing stock for this year’s model. The 05 Eurus is a great wheel from all reports, so I hope they work well for you.

I have a pair of 2005 Eurus’ and rode them in the Alps without a problem. I use them on poor roads as training wheels and im 220lbs, without a problem. Never been trued and 2 flats in several thousand kms.

The Campag Neutrons are a bit more climbing specific and a similar level of customer satisfaction.

What about another pair of Eastons?

But, watch the rim temperature on the descents. I was stopping every 5-10mins to take pics and let them cool down.

I vote Eurus. I had a set of 2003 or 2004 Zondas and loved them. Comparing the Zondas with Ksyrium SL’s, the Campys ride much nicer (more comfortable), but are still stiff in the horizontal plane.

That being said, the new ES is a very nice wheel. I’m not a big fan of the one red spoke, though. I think the Eurus wins in style points and simply for the fact that you don’t see it as much.

I had a puncture today on a descent and burnt my palm as I gripped the wheel to release. Though, if that’s the worst injury I receive with a puncture on a downhill, I’m quite happy, as it could have been ugly.

Yes, I considered the Easton Ascent II, but like the look of the black stealth and bladed spokes of the mentioned. The Neutrons might be worth a look but I was surprised to see they actually weigh more than the Eurus (1595 vs 1495). No doubt a good wheelset.

A friend of mine http://www.piptaylor.com/ is sponsored by Campag, and uses the Eurus’ occasionally to race (olympic distance).

Check eBay for the Neutrons. They are a good wheelset but not that well known, so can go cheaply.

The ‘06 Campy’s rock! Mavic… same ol’ thing with a higher price tag. Setting aside that I am a Campy junkie, I prefer the Campy’s as we have had less issues with them.
