I’ve had my eye on either the Campagnolo Shamal or Fulcrum Racing Zero wheelset as a nice upgrade wheelset (without getting into carbon or deep profiles) for my road bike but a reasonably priced set of Campy Eurus has just popped up and I’m pretty tempted to go for them instead. They’re the 2011 model and used but in good shape. Any reason why I would avoid them and hang on for the Shamals or Zeros? Or just go for the nice deal? If you’ve any experience with these, please drop a comment.
Excellent all-round wheels, though I prefer the cheaper Zondas. Main difference is aluminium versus steel spokes. Steel spokes just seem to be a safer choice.
They’re pretty different wheels with the Eurus being pretty low profile. I have a pair of the Scirocco, which is the cheaper Eurus model (also has the G3 spoke pattern on both wheels). They are BOMB PROOF. I’ve been riding them hard for years now and never had to be trued. I ran head on into a car at 25 mph. The tire exploded frame impacted 4-5 inches and the wheel was still in true!!! I would highly recommend any campy wheels.
The eurus is great for a nice lightweight training wheel or race wheel in a pinch. The shamal is just something different all together.
Okay - the new Shamals are just not all that. Certainly not compared to the HPW12 - the last “real” Shamal. But, I am a bit biased. Between the Shamal and the Eurus the front wheels are VERY similar. I for one how ever am not at all a fan of the Alu spokes that they are using. I was with a buddy and he inadvertatly put a pedal into my wheel (at about 2mph). Well, eight spokes, and about $200 later I got the wheel back in order. It was a HUGE pain in the ass to get the wheel tension equal as the tools are just not designed for the Dural Spokes. Then, you take into consideration that if you need a spoke in a pinch - you are screwed. I ride Eurus G3 as one of my day to day wheel sets. It is a nice enough wheel - but I think that the G3 rides a bit rougher than my “go to wheel” - Neutrons. I love love love the Neutrons and have never had an issue with them - but, if I did - even with the hidden nipples and all, I am certain that I could thread a spoke in a pinch and get the wheel rolling.
So - short of it…I would get the Eurus. And, if you look at Campys charts - they are so so close.
Yeah, they really don’t look that different.
Obviously I haven’t been in the market for wheels for a while.
I have had two friends with Eurus wheels and they both like them a lot.
I’ve had eurus on my bmc pro machine since 2008 and they have been great training wheels. compared to mavics that i repeatedly purchased previously. They are truly bombproof and have record hubs that are very smooth rolling. Shamals look too odd with their spoke pattern and are overpriced, shop around on price. Try non stop cyclismo on eBay.
Agreed - Neutron is the flagship wheel from the Campy house - It is simply a better, lighter, faster, more comfortable - and CHEAPER wheel (while maintaining Record hubs)
.
I recently bought a set of Eurus two way fit wheels. They’re stiffer than the Ksyrium SL’s that I rode for years. Really like them, but only have 667 miles on them. So, it’s a bit early. Advertised weight was dead on. My Mavics never were.
I’ve been riding a set of Eurus two-way fits for three years with zero issues. Thousands of miles and still never have needed to true them. Highly recommend.
Definitely a good call to get the Eurus, save the coin and get something else bling for the bike. No performance difference aside from the bearings, if you are into that kind of thing. And as mentioned, they are such a solid, balanced wheel which I think makes them head and shoulders above Ksyrium’s. Although Zonda’s are also right there and even a bit more stable since they don’t have those fat, wide spokes.
