Campagnolo bottom-bracket & FSA Carbon cranks?

Questions for the mechanics

Note: I don’t build my own bikes for a reason…

I have a new old-stock FSA Carbon Pro Road Crankset (stamped ‘ISO’ on the back), which according to FSA is correct for a square-taper Campy bottom bracket. I also have a new 2004 Chorus (double/102mm) BB. They have not been installed yet on my new bike, but when I dry-fit them it seems that the crank-arm only inserts onto the BB spindle-bolt about 3/4 of the way. Will this end up being ‘flush’ when the crank bolt is installed and properly torqued during LBS build-up?

Also, is the size of the BB spindle always the same for Campy (double-chainring only), regardless of model-year?

Thanks,

Keith

The square taper bb will fit your crankset. A campy square taper is, as far as I’ve ever seen, always the same size. The crank is pressed onto the bb taper by tightening the crank bolt…you should be concerned IF you can get the crank entirely onto the spindle without the bolt. Your’re right, the torque is why you need an extractor to get the crank off.

Now, whether you have the correct bb width for your frame/crankset is impossible for me to tell but 102 mm ‘sounds’ about right.

Chorus and Record use a 102mm spindle, ISO taper, which is what the old FSAs were made for. Centaur and below use a 111mm BB. I’m sure your cranks would fit on those, but the chainline would be off. A moot point, since you will be using a Chorus BB.

The “crank-arm only inserts onto the BB spindle-bolt about 3/4 of the way” - that’s how it is with Chorus BB and crank.
