Guys, I have been looking for a Chorus or Record compact chainset to replace the FSA on my S2 and found one on ebay with 52/34 chainrings on it. It’s a genuine Campag offering as the big ring has that combo stamped into it, but I thought there was a maximum 16 tooth difference for shifting to be reliable on the front derailleur.
Does anyone have one of these combinations that can weigh in on shifting quality? Failing that, any suggestion other than HTFU with a standard (my knees won’t take it on the mountains I enjoy) please?
maybe a 52/36 ?
When they were climbing Zoncolan and doing the time trial at Planes de Corones in the Giro last year, there were all sorts of reports by velonews on what riders did. Most went with 50/34t, some had 52/36t.
No, it’s definitely a 52/34 chainring pairing.
sorry, i meant that you could swap the 34T for the 36T.
Alternatively, it seems that a chain catcher should help with potential problems with dropped chains.
Oh, I see what you mean.
I like the 34 it allows me to keep on top of the gear with a 25 in the mountains.
You are correct re: 16T being the “optimum” for front shifting performance. Not saying it won’t work with that combo, but I gotta think it will be a little finicky.
Did a quick search and could only find 50/34 options online. Dunno where they came up with this combo…but like I said, my search was quick.
All that said, I salute your attention to correct spelling.
Oh, what did I spell incorrectly?
Nothing!! It was a compliment…I was referring to “Campag.”
;^)
Ah, I still can’t get used to calling it Campy, managed to get to Campag so that’s progress, eh?
Hey guys…
You’ll most likely find at 52/36 combo that companies like Specialized and others use at oem. It’s been gaining popularity for a couple years. It’s not really Standard and it’s not really Compact…but a middle ground that some like. It’s made in a 110 BCD as creating a 36t for a 130bcd is very difficult…so the 52/36t is based on a 110.
Praxis Works will be coming out with this combo very soon an aftermarket offering. It will be 11-speed compatible, and with forged manufacturing also. Look for it as we roll into summer. Here is some more info on us.
