Now I know many of you are big coffee drinkers, I was just wondering if anyone else has suffered from a possible caffeine overdose?
Yesterday, I had 2 espressos in the morning, and then had drank around 800ml to 1 litre of diet coke by around 1pm . Was beginning to feel really tired and achey by around 4pm, and then around 5.30pm, I was having a beer with dinner and began to feel really dizzy (room was spinning) and just not with it, plus felt shattered.
Anyone else suffered from a caffeine overdose? Whether it be in racing, training or whatever.
Sure, but I get all jittery, anxious, and sometimes nervous. Been a long time, but we used to take no doz before races in the old days, each one like a cup of coffee. So a couple of those and 3 cups, now you are 500mg into some heart stopping legal doping.
And I was sensitive, remember Molina and a friend of mine Kim Bushong who took Vivarin, 200mg each. And they would take 4.5. or 6 of them. That was 1000+mg, oh my…But I also have seen Molina drink a dozen cups of coffee in one sitting, so he certainly was acclimated to caffeine.
And others have one cup and they feel like jumping out of their skin, so to each his own with that stuff. Sounds like you had a lot of other stuff going on too, so probably a basket of bad choices to get you to where you were…
I go on a 1-2x a month “detox” of coffee. I find when I have trouble sleeping, or have a higher tolerance, I go cold turkey off coffee for about a week. When drinking coffee, it is typically an hour or two before a workout, and I most definitely have a better workout, and it cleans me out so I’m basically empty & am not carrying extra weight. My limit of coffee is when my arm pits start sweating from not doing anything but drinking coffee. That usually means I’m at my 2 cup or 3 cup limit. Too much acid to go beyond that. Can’t say I’ve really “O.D’d” on caffiene as I try to get as much sleep as possible so I do not need it as a crutch. The only time I may need another cup is after lunch at work, I get sleepy after food is sitting in the gut for an hour. Have you tried going cold turkey for a week (putting up with the heachaches)…and resetting your system??
Yeah. I might try that. I gave up regular coffee for around 3 years when I was recovering from a concussion, and would just drink decaf. I started drinking home made cold brew last year, then began drinking espresso more regularly when I got a nespresso - it’s just too easy to make in the morning.

A single shot of espresso has roughly 40mg of caffeine (its a common mistake that people think a shot of espresso has more caffeine than a cup of coffee…).
A litre of diet coke has roughly 130mg caffeine.
So you had a total of about 210mg of caffeine over 5 - 6 hours. Thats nothing.
For comparison, a ‘grande’ (large) starbucks coffee has 330mg caffeine…
I agree. Dehydration plus caffeine can have bad results, but 200mg isn’t anything. I’ll make a coffee in my moka pot and then pull a double shot from my espresso machine. (~150mg) I’ll train for an hour and then make 10 cups (80 fl oz) of coffee and sip on that for the rest of the day. It’s usually gone by 2:30 PM. I’ll probably have one more cup around 4:00 PM for a study session.
Law school is a blast.
I’ve noticed that caffeine from different sources will hit me harder. If I’ve been drinking a lot of drip coffee, I’ll switch to exclusively espresso or cycle it to pour over for a month or two.
I have become slightly addicted to coffee this stressful year. My doctor told me to lay off of it, since i have trouble sleeping, but i gave up since it didn’t seem to make a difference. I used to only drink it about twice a week, but recently i got cozzy espresso maker I’ve been making cappuccinos everyday, and i’ve noticed the biggest difference! I have so much more energy throughout the day, and i’ve been much happier. I’m sure this effect will wane after a few weeks, but for now its nice.
I’m an avid coffee drinker, and sometimes tend to go overboard.
My best effort was last summer when I had about 7 cups in an afternoon. I don’t think I’ve been as f*ck’d up as I was that afternoon. Most illegal drugs would have a hard time beating what I went trough.
In my defense: a good friend of me is a barista and we were testing a ton of new beans she bought.
But yeah, as others said, the dose you took probably didn’t cause what you went trough.
My body generally gives me a warning as I’m approaching too much caffeine, and that warning gets stronger if I ignore it.
If I drink lots of coffee on an empty stomach I get a little queasy and nauseous. Usually if I eat food and stop the caffeine intake for a bit this goes away.
Diet coke on the other hand can really upset my stomach if I have very much of it. I enjoy a small glass of it, but anything more than 1 can turns my stomach sour, so I gave it up completely. My guess is that you were dehydrated or low blood sugar or your body was fighting off something else.
As a few others have said, it may be the Diet Coke.
n=1, but when I was first diagnosed with T1D, I tried many products with artificial sweeteners and most made me feel like garbage.
Dizziness where the room is spinning is also some cause for concern. Never hurts to get checked out by your physician.
I had a caffeine overdose back in college. I had the bright idea to eat instant coffee by the spoonful so that I could stay awake all night to write a paper. I was on spoonful 5 or 6 when the first finally started to kick in. I got a lot of work done in about 45 minutes but after that I couldn’t even focus my eyes in one spot for more than an instant. I was all over the place. I definitely wouldn’t do it again or recommend it.
This is an old thread! I ended up getting sick with a cold or something and no that much Diet Coke is not usual. Now that I got another concussion I’m back off the caffeine
Personally if I drink even just a soda after 7 PM it will ruin my night of sleep. However I also consume 2 cups of coffee before a race or workout and if during a long session I will do caffeine along the way. Just another game of trial and error really.
