What is the optimal running cadence and stride lenght?
Depends. Are you Paul Tergat or Haile Gebrselassie?
its not so much stride length…u wanna make sure your mid or fore foot strike the ground first…if u wanna go faster u increase cadence not stride length…u would start to heel strike and that leads to injury. Newtons website has a good example
It’s a highly individual thing, bigger guys typically have a slower cadence, but the reason is obvious.
Check out the evolution or chi running methods, they will give you a lot of info.
Sage advice from a former coach:
“Don’t think just run.”
.
the last authoritative comments i remember reading about foot strike is that there is no single answer. heel/mid/fore strikers exist at every level of running. what matters most is to discover the style of foot striking that works best for your body, not following some hypothesis that attempts to generalize across all runners.

i do remeber reading how heel strike running causes knee problems tho…and being a former heel striker runner i am inclined to agree wholeheartedly
