Cadence Sensor Problems

Having some problems with my speed/cadence sensor it’s picking up my cadence but not my wheel speed (Garmin) Moved & changed the magnet, replaced the battery, thought it helped once but this a.m. I made a multiple gear change and sensor quit when the bike jarred. Have a feeling there’s a broken wire. Anyone ever deal with this?

I’ve got the opposite problem with my wired Echo computer. Worked great for years and the speed sensor still works OK, but the cadence sensor has gone wacko over the last couple of months. Spent a lot of time making sure the sensors are aligned properly and tight. It always works fine on the workstand in my garage, but once I get out on the road, it works sporadically: OK for a while, then no reading, then some high reading in high triple digits (appears to be twice what it should be). I’m confident it’s not a sensor position problem, so suspecting it’s an internal or wiring issue. I’m getting a new Catseye wireless unit for Christmas, so just going to retire the Echo unit.

double checked my battery, 3.18 volts according to my multi-meter. I had read somewhere that there’s wires that break? Where?

In my case, after about 5 years, the cadence unit (GSC-10), started eating a battery every month. So I bought a new one. My point being, I think the unit has a lifespan which is shorter than some of us may like and likely needs to be replaced every few years if it starts acting up. Having said that, I know others that have gone longer without an issue but for $30 or whatever they cost, it wasn’t a big deal to replace.

Where are picking them up for $30, the cheapest I can find is $50 from MEC, is there a cheaper source?

Got mine from MEC as well. I picked up a few things that day (spent $150), I “thought” it was $30 from the receipt, that must have been for something else. But gpscentral has them for $34.95, and, in stock. They are in Calgary but ship anywhere, don’t know about shipping charges.

Good luck.

I had the same issue with my fr70 and 910xt, and the garmin speed/candence sensor. It got it working eventually on a trainer by first moving the magnet so close to the sensor, it would hit the arm of the sensor (of course not at high speeds as to not wanting to break it), and then moving it forward or backwards ever so slightly. Once it got working, I moved it ever so slightly as to not hit the sensor.

For sure, that thing is fickle compared to my old cateye.

Got mine here for $36, with free shipping.

I think I’m going to try replacing the reed switch on the wheel speed arm. Found a post on another site and it mentions that the Cateye reed switches are better. So I’m going to try using one of my left overs.

Just to follow up, I replaced the reed switch in the wheel speed arm and it’s back to working great. The fix is a bit of a hack as I had to cut the arm apart. At least I have a cadence sensor that’s working and I’ll be casually hinting to Santa’s elves that I need a new one before the snow melts

I had the same problem with mine earlier this year. I called Garmin and they send me a new one.

4iiii has a great ant+ speed cadence sensor. Cheaper and superior design to the Garmin.
