Dude where was this?!?!
I was on the San Diego Bike Club ride in May and we got pulled over in cardiff. Our group was probably 75-120 people at that point. I just pulled a U-turn and got out of there. Apparently the cop was saying that he was going to ticket every single rider for rolling 1-2 seconds early on a red light. Needless to say, that didn’t happen. I think he realized he was undergunned and would never be able to pick out who actually commited the infraction, so the ride continued without tickets after a 10 minute delay.
Mtka loop in Long Lake…right off Willow.
Mostly roadies on Tues night…you should come out! Lots of hammering and group effort.
75-120!
Yikes. I imagine the cars love you guys out there…
We didn’t get a ticket…but it certainly felt it was going that way in the beginning.
Anybody ever get a ticket on their bike besides that guy in Cali speeding on the beach?
Did he offer you 2 points? Some jack ass cop in Ohio offered Roof, myself and some others 2 points for the same offence…hell in Ill Noise we dont get points…how many points till I win?
Hmm was that at that one weird 4-way intersection? In any event I don’t have any more races on the agenda this season so I don’t need to be hammering anymore. Cathy might want to go though! Cathy and I did have fun last night in Bahram’s spinning class…it was energetic to say the least!
Someone in the LA Tri Club reported getting a ticket a few weeks ago for a stop sign infraction in Palos Verdes. At some intersections in PV, there are signs that say “Bike Traffic Laws Strictly Enforced” or something similar. I look around but don’t stop unless I have to because of a car.
FYI, Additional background on the guy who got the speeding ticket in Hermosa Beach – he was on “the Strand”, which in Hermosa Beach is a paved path used jointly by bikers, rollerbladers and pedestrians. Homes are located right on the Strand, meaning people do step out onto the Strand from homes/patios, or from sidewalks that intersect with the Strand every block or so. It can get very crowded on the weekend, with lots of kids and lots of clueless people who walk right down the middle or even on the wrong side of the dashed yellow line. I read that the guy complained that the Strand was virtually deserted at the time that he got his ticket. The problem is you do have the possibility of people stepping onto the Strand without warning. Yes, those people should look first, but it is a safety issue, kind of like lowering the speed limit near a school. Also, the guy got his ticket shortly after a Hermosa Beach city employee was killed in a collision with a cyclist when she was trying to cross the bike path in neighboring Manhattan Beach (which does have a separate bike path parallel to the pedestrian Strand). So it wasn’t really the best time in the world to be riding over the Strand speed limit in Hermosa.
To top it off, the speed limit there is only 8 MPH (yes, eight). Personally, I avoid it, and ride through Hermosa a few blocks inland – running the risk of a ticket for going through several stop signs along the way
Gee, all that officer is missing is the powdered sugar, from the doughnut he was eating, on the front of his shirt.
By the looks of the belly on this police officer it seems that he has consumed many doughnuts or twinkies.
I recall that when I was leaving Eugene, OR they were currently trying to pass a law that stated bikes didn’t have to stop at the stop signs if there were no cars coming through the intersection. They basically stated that being on a bike allows one to be in contact with their surrounding in a much more intimate way than being in a bubble/car. Not sure if it ever passed, but that’s pretty typical Eugene progressiveness and I think it made sense, as the speed limits in that city were almost always in between 25-35mph.
“Call me stupid.”
Since no one else obliged…
Smitty you’re stupid.
We all want to be treated like cars when it suits us, but not when we bear responsibilities. Drives me nuts.
Basically I want to be taken seriously on the road. If that means I can get tickets for running stop signs fine, as long as the cars can get tickets for cutting me off, making a right turn .05 seconds after passing me etc.
I find the fact that you got stopped somehow encouraging, perhaps we are being taken seriously. That’s what my rose colored glasses how anyway.
I won’t be stopping if there are no cars in sight. As if people in cars come to FULL COMPLETE STOPS at EVERY stop sign.
no , they don’t , and I’m not doing it on my bike either.
I don’t call this being taken seriously. I call it being harrassed. IF the police want to look out for us, have em follow a peloton in an unmarked and watch for morons buzzing us.
that would be productive , but might take a little too much of their time.
I was pretty much thinking the same thing.
If there was ever a situation that warranted a ticket, this was it. Rural area, sloping downhill, no cars, etc…the pelton didn’t make things any better.
We took it easy for the remaining part of the ride. Should be interesting to see how that changes the ride next week. We are usually pretty good about rolling stop and “CLEAR” rather than just riding through…
So you win the “MN State Champs” and then retire for the season? Perhaps you or Cathy can run for me at Moo…
A large number of riders got tickets during the OneHelluvaRide in Michgan a few weeks ago. The organizers had posted numerous “Single File Only” signs on the road for the last couple miles before the lunch stop. While at lunch I heard that a lot of riders from one of the better known clubs in the area got tickets. When I looped around after lunch, I saw a cop giving tickets to about 4 riders.
Yup. And if you hadn’t raced LTF the day before I think you’d have won that prestigious title yourself!
LOL…use that term “race” very loosely with me. I was bustin a move at Martini Blu on Sat night. ;o)
You think the pros race hard…you should see them party! Yikes. That’s what happens when $500k exchanges hands AND there is an open bar.
AP was excited that he beat you in the swim (seconds)…so don’t let that happen again. I caught him in T1 while he was putting on SOCKS. He’s fast, but doesn’t have a sense of urgency when racing. Plus, he runs slower than me and I’m hurt & chubby right now.
I did win my AG though…I’m getting old.
Come out to Buck tomorrow night…the LAST MTB race EVER at Buck as they are trying to sell the land next to the hill. Bring a pitcher and you can fill it with Summitt for only $9…bring a chair as well. We race Rec and then do a 4 mile run…
my friend has 2 tickets on his fridge for biking offences.
one for failing to stop at stop sign. and one for riding his bike without a bell.
i got stopped for going through 4 red lights riding DT toronto. 2 of them were questionable oranges that i thought i could make. 2 were rolling into the intersection once the opposite light had turned red. the cop was actually quite nice. would have been $200 and 3 points of my driver’s licence (so he said, but i’m not sure if you get points taken off if you’re on your bike - i’m looking at a TO cycling map that says cyclists get the same fine but no demerits as cars) for each offence. 800 bucks and loss of licence. he let me go with a stern repremand. needless to say. i learned my lesson that day.
W/O a bell? What’s with that?
Anybody gotten a helmet violation in Monterey?
Found this site to be pretty interesting…and entertaining.
AP beat me on the swim because he wore a full wetsuit and I wore none! I then made the mistake to try and draft Goldberg…which blew me up by the second buoy. I did have a quick T1 though. I don’t think I’ll race Buck, but I know that Cathy is planning on racing.
