Burningman - Running

I’m making my first pillage to Black Rock Desert in a month and of course i’m bringing my running shoes. More ground covered = more sights to see. Do the burners have any organized running events out there? I may have seen something for a 5K but i’m not sure.

There has indeed been a 5k in past years. Not sure if it’s happening again this year; it was put on last year by STer teknoslug.
There are plenty of unorganized runners; a woman I met last year ran a solo marathon early one morning.
I usually get a couple runs in on the choice mornings that I’m able to drag my ass out of bed before it gets WAY too hot. I like running the circumferential streets as a way to see the neighborhoods in more detail. Prepare yourself for catcalls, strange looks, free food, and being forced to drink booze well before noon. Wait, that happens out there even if you’re not running…

Awesome. I can’t wait for all of the above. I suppose costumes are encouraged?!

Call 'em costumes or playa gear, but normal street clothes will make you stick out like a sore thumb, if such a thing is possible out there. Some creative combination of clothes you wouldn’t normally wear, lack of clothes, body paint, costumey-type items, heat (and cold) and dust protective gear, and you’re pretty much on the right track. Express thyself, virgin!

Many peoples’ clothes planning covers the following categories:
Morning and evening- warm out, very temperate, best opportunity for the, um, less is more approach
Midday- form follows function, protection from the elements is the basis
Night- some bastardized form of layering that provides the flexibility between travelling through the cold night and shedding warmth when you arrive at whatever party or event tickles your fancy

teknoslug went to the trouble last year for the 5k to have race numbers printed out ahead of time and prizes and such; along with a GPS-verified course, it was the pinnacle of organization considering how most things go out there.

There has also been a recurring Black Rock Triathlon…“swimming” in playa dust ~10s, ~400m bike, ~200m run.

If you plan to party at all I don’t know how you could run out there. I know Reno Rider won a 5k out there but he’s a little crazy ;).

I planned to run last year and was going to wear a kilt. The running didn’t happen, the kilt did. :).

The BRC 5k is happening again this year.
Thursday 8am, 6:00 and esplanade.
GPS measured, race numbers ordered (Tyvek this time!), and digital race clock.
Prizes awarded to top male/female (case of PBR or bottle of homemade gingered vodka).
Gatorade provided, bring a cup.
Last year Renorider’s time was 17:20ish.
Top female time was ~21:00.
I have the all the finishers’ times around here somewhere.

BRC Perimeter runs (no drop, ~7mi)
Sun-Wed, 7am, meet at the Man.

Hope to see y’all out there!

strong work there mate; big thank you in advance for your organizational efforts.
see ya there.
mmm, gingered vodka…mmmotivation

Thanks! See you out there! Renorider is certainly the odds on favorite to take home the booze. What will he do to top his race kit from last year though?

Fuck. Guess I better start running. And call my wardrobe consultant. It’s hard to roll in as a sleeper with a call-out like that!

You’ve hit it on the head…except I didn’t see any other runners, or any other exercising, when I was out there last year- though it didn’t matter. Mostly people commended me for being out there, sweating in the heat! I didn’t go until later though- maybe like 8 or 9, and returned by 10-ish most days. It was a great way to explore the Playa though and to be up for many of the others- loved that!

BRC is a great place to run, just beat the heat and you’ll have a great time!

Riding my 50-lb. cruiser bike for miles through dust-dunes against the prevailing wind on the open playa sure feels like exercise! And I get my run speed workouts in by sprinting to the water trucks for impromptu showers (the quick disrobing en route also also helps with transition skills) - amazing I haven’t pulled a hammy yet doing that. Not to mention the steady state aerobic workout of dancing through the night. Throw some random trampolining, some roller discoing, a few yoga sessions in there for flexibility/core strength, along with some Balinese monkey chanting for improved breath control, and I think I’m fitter when I return then when I got there. Of course the required week’s worth of sleep upon return probably spoils that…

Rik

Very true…a cruiser is a necessity and last year w/ the sand dunes, it was exercise! Especially going out to the tower where the dunes were really thick. It was great at night when you couldn’t see them ahead of time, so there was no time to sprint to pick up speed to make it through.

Yeah - talk about low cadence/high torque intervals! Last year was the worst I’d ever seen it out there in terms of soft surface and dust patches. I think playa conditions should be much improved this year with the late and plentiful rains this spring.

Rik

Oh man… I won’t be there this year and will miss all the fun! I think there’s a triathlon held at some point too. For the swim you flail around on the playa, then hop on your bike and finish off with a short jaunt. I believe the aid station has a nice refreshing vodka mix of something… Not sure if it’s being held this year or not…

Enjoy yourself - it’s impossible not to if you’re open minded!

If will get renorider WASTED the night before right on through to the race if someone splits the ginger vodka with me

I think he still might pull off the win! But it’s worth a try…

Rik

hmmm…I’m trying to think of another weakness he has but I don’t think he has any!

Maybe if an art installation that will ONLY be up during the race that he needs to take pics of goes up…

I for one will not be awake or in the proper capacity to race that morning.

Oh, grasshopper, I won’t even begin to tell you what was I was metabolizing when the gun went off last year…

I just wanted to reconfirm that I am super stoked about the B-man 5k. I think I’ll still be up from the night before so I’ll be warmed up and ready to rip. I’ll be in knee high black and white soccer socks. Come say hello.
