I am going to be attempting my first marathon in 6 days! I have trained well, (I think) and feel for the most part ready to go. My long run to date was a 20 miler done two full weeks ago. I am still feeling bruised on my left foot. The outer edge and heal. Though not extreme this may cause issues over the full 26 miles. My questions are:
- How long can one expect that to last, and should all be fine for my marathon attempt?
- Should I even attempt the full marathon knowing I will be doing an April 1st half Ironman. Which is more important to me right now.
- Do I need to just suck it up and go!
With those asked…Would it be ok to do a Sprint a week before my half Ironman? I am leaning toward no because of recovery time, but a Sprint before a Half IM? Should be fine right? I just don’t have a lot of experience yet.
Thank you for your replies

It’s probably fine, and I always expect gremlins like this to pop up 6 days before a big race.
If you are inexperienced, a sprint the weekend before the HIM is not a good idea. Like racing a half isn’t already hard enough…

I disagree. If the OP is in good enough shape to do a HIM, he’s certainly in good enough shape to do a sprint and recover in a week’s time. The best way to gain experience is through racing. I say he should go for it. If he’s concerned, he doesn’t need to go all out. The spring would give him a good idea about his set-up, practice open water swimming, practice transitioning, etc.
Hopefully you are on a taper right now, so you should be fine. I’d do all my workouts this week aqua jogging. It’s boring as heck, but you won’t loose anything and it’s all non weight bearing.

Upon further investigation I found that my shoes mileage was about 300 miles and they were done in. That was causing me the bruise feeling not so much the 20 mile run I did. With that said now I am going into this marathon wearing a new pair of shoes. Not something I am excited about but I should be fine. I will be mostly swimming this week. I will only run a couple of 5K’s this week to get some thing on my new shoes.
I have been running and doing triathlon stuff for a year now. I have done an Oly tri and think that a Sprint a week before the HIM should be fine as long as I don’t do the Sprint like I think I am a PRO!!!
