Bruce Buchanan - RIP

For those of you who knew him, Bruce Buchanan passed away Saturday morning at age 78. He was a true competitor, a very giving mentor, and somebody who left an impact on those who knew him. He was the first person 50 or over to break 10 hours at Kona. He won his age group 7 times, and placed in the top 3 AG 11 of the 15 times he raced. He has been out of the sport for a while due to injuries, but kept swimming many times a week. He also still mentored triathletes whenever asked. He was a very good friend to have.

The last story on him covered many of his accomplishments.

My condolences to Bruce’s family and friends. He was a AG legend to me when I started doing IM in the mid '90s. Any news on his cause of death?

Beat me many times great athlete

Appears to have been cardiac arrest in his sleep.

Rest In Peace Bruce. Condolences to his family and friends. One of the best age groupers who was periodontist by day.

Last saw him at St. Anthony’s in 2007, where he had good race. Shared house at Gulf Coast in early 90s. Quick to give pointers and suggestions on triathlon and bad back issues. Big believer in weight training too. And fun to be around at post race parties.
