looking for a new running shoe. I have normally purchased the asics gel nimbus series, and haven’t had any problems with them (regarding the previous post about the heel tearing up). I am looking for something new and saw some comments regarding the brooks line.
My info: overweight and trying to get back into racing (again!). I weigh 195 but race at 165-170. Normal to high arch.
Are the Glycerine shoes really worth $125-140? I saw them on ebay for 115 but then pay 10 or so shipping.
Hook me up with any shoe warehouse deals or sites.
Depending on your shoe size you can do better. I am 10.5 which usually runs out fairly quick.
I like all the standard companys: zappos, shoebuy, kellys running warehouse, holabird sports, eastbay, etc. Google brooks glycerin and watch the companies to see current prices and then check retailmenot.com for coupon codes.
Note: I am disappointed in V8 which is the latest version I have run in as they don’t have the normal 500 miles of durability. I have run in V2, V4, V5, V6, V7, and V8 all running 500 miles before retiring.
while I don’t know much on the Glycerin, I LOVE the Pure Line. This year I have been training and racing in both the Pure Cadence and Pure Flow (Cadence has more support, Flow more neutral). All the Pure models are based around a 4mm ramp from heel-toe, and are fairly light (around 8.5-9oz for size 9). Also this winter I think they are coming out with a new one with an optional liner, and when you use it it’s 4mm, when you take it out it’s 0mm.
So if you are considering going to the more “minimalist” style, definitely give them a shot!
I’ve been wearing Glycerin for 3 years after many problems with shoes before. I’ve been looking to buy a new shoe (Gel Nimbus is recommended a lot) but why would I fix something that’s working for me?!
If you insist on switching, I would recommend Glycerin. I run marathons and all distance triathlons, have a very high arch and could stand to lose 10 pounds - but Glycerins work for me!
Funny the 8 has so many complaints. Just the rubber wore out fast? I have 1200 miles on mine…no I’m not kidding. I’ve been running in them since september of last year.

I ran in ASICS, Cumulus or Nimbus. I forget which. Based on my foot, it’s what I should have been wearing but I actually liked the GT series better. Anyway, the uppers wore out too quickly. I changed to Glycerin and have been happy with them.
Try Sierra Trading Post. If they don’t have them in stock, sign up for MyUpdates for Brooks. They’ll send you a message when a new item comes in from them.
My wife wont wear any other running shoe since I put her in the Glycerins. U can probably find the 8s or 9s for pretty cheap. Google search isn’t that hard to use
While I love Brooks, I do have to say if it works for you (in running) dont switch. I run in the ST5/T7/Trailblade/Pure Cadence and love all but the Pure. I still have T6/ST4/Cascadia that I rotate in.

Obviously I could have changed my running style, but the previous models looked almonst pristine after 500 miles(5’11" 170lbs size 10.5), but the last 2 pairs of V8s I was down to the foam in my left shoe before 250 miles.
I am about to retire a pair and my next pair is also V8. We will see whether I have fixed any running style issues via chiropractic or a running class I took.
How do you determine when your shoes should be retired since you obviously don’t go by mileage?
Really? You might want to ask yourself why you said that. I guess as someone who sells shoes the 500 mile mark is great. Please, by all means replace your shoes before their total wear life. I have had zero issues thus far, I even have a pair of nimbus’s with 1000 on them I’ll use ocasionally. The rubber is what’s breaking down and I’m an extremely efficient runner. The dna doesn’t wear out the same as asics gel. Plus it helps I sub my shoes out and alternate between the ghost 5 and the glycerins. That puts a lot less stress on a pair.
When you get a niggle or anything out of the ordinary and you feel it is tied to the shoes, that is when I replace mine. The 500 mile mark or whatever is basically just hype. I’ve talked to several brooks reps and can assure you that their product is superior. It lasts a very long time and the dna doesn’t just absorb shock, it gives back. Something like 20% of the force applied to it. This keeps the foam from becoming over-compacted or pressured like a pair of asics gel for example and keeps them going strong. For me I’ve never really worn out shoes, except for the uppers on asics when I ran in those 4 years ago, those I ripped and shredded like no other. A trick to really get your moneys worth is to keep 2-3 pairs and switch them out each day. Giving them time to “recover” helps get them that feeling back and makes sure they’re not being run into the ground.
Brooks are a great shoe. Ever since dropping all their other lines and going only running/walking, they have hit the nail on the head. With that said, others are correct and stick with what has been working for you. Nothing worse than paying a lot of money for something you aren’t sure will work when you have a safe option the whole time.
I love Brooks and have only ever worn Brooks. I won’t fix what isn’t broken.
There is an outlet in Bothell, WA that has last year’s models. I picked up the 9s for $85 this weekend. Sometimes they have the year before as well.
Go to their website, search for outlet, and give them a call. They ship for $6.
That. I ran in Ghost for years. Jumped from Ghost to Glycerin earler this year. Glycerin is a great shoe. The 10 is a little pricey but not much has changed since 9. So if you know your size you can order Glycerin 9 online for $80 or less:
Another vote for Pure Project shoes. I’m about 185 lbs and run in Pureflows. Best shoe I’ve ever run in and very light as well. Was running in Newtons and they were just a little off size-wise for me. Also, Pureflows are only $90 before finding any discounts.
I am surprised no one knows this, and i hate to give up my secret, but you can get the previous version of most shoes on brooks’ website. Glycerin - $85.
Another note on the Pure Projects… try them on first. I found that different models fit different, especially in width. The Pure Connect was crazy narrow, but the other ones fit normal to me (I don’t have a wide foot though, pretty much an average width or slightly narrow depending who you talk to)
