Brooks Ghost vs. Ghost 2

I tried on a pair of the Ghost 2 for a couple of minutes today, and loved them (as compared to the heavier Adrenaline that I’m wearing now). The only problem with the Ghost 2 is that the arches seem to high and uncomfortable. Running magazine’s review of the Ghost 2 points out the high arch. There is no mention of a high arch in the reviews of the original Ghost, so I’m thinking that might be the right shoe for me.

I’m probably going to pick one up online, but I thought I’d ask for opinions here first.

How similar or different is the original Ghost from the Ghost 2?

Cheers,

pull out the insole and put in one that feels better…like from your adrenaline. that may help. im sure the store will let u at least do that. if not, screw them and go somewhere that will.

fyi, ive got the ghost I and they are nice, but a bit too soft on the forefoot.

I’m on my second pair of Ghosts: Ghost (1) and now Ghost 2. The 2s did require some time for adjustment. By the third (6-mile) run, the feeling of the high arch had all but disappeared, and, now, a month later, everything is fine & dandy.

Slightly higher arch and slightly wider heel box. I am on my 4th pair of Ghost. Ghost2 did not work so well for me.

I asked the question at Brooks camp this past summer - how different are Ghost 1 and Ghost 2? The answer was “VERY different.” The main issue I mentioned was sizing - Ghost1 you typically had to order a 1/2 size larger than your normal size. Apparently they took care of that, and made some other tweaks with the Ghost2 (I didn’t get those details). At any rate, if you don’t get the answer here or you want a more definitive answer - the folks at Brooks are very receptive - I would put a call in to Brooks HQ on Monday and I’m sure someone would be happy to help explain the differences. Try the Launch if you ever get a chance - I was fine with the Ghost until I tried the Launch!

The midsole on the Ghost 1 and 2 are exactly the same. New color/upper, but if the 2 didn’t work for you, I wouldn’t expect the 1 to work. The 3 is coming out sometime in June/July if memory serves correct, and it will be a completely redesigned shoe. No more funky curvy-toe thing.

Any reason besides weight why you want to get out of the Adrenaline? Completely different type of shoe than the Ghost. If you’ve been comfortable and injury free in the Adrenaline and just want to go lighter, something in the DS-Trainer range might be worth a shot, but still won’t have the same medial support as the Adrenaline.

On another note, the ‘insole’ that is in the shoes when you buy them is not designed to add much, if anything, in the way of support- its a sockliner. So, unless you’ve replaced the one that came in the Adrenaline, that shouldn’t make a difference.

Be deliberate and careful if you decide to make the switch from the Adrenaline to the Ghost-there’s two different things going on in those shoes.

The Adrenalines used to be the perfect shoe for me then they were redesigned and did not work for my feet anymore. I don’t know what the folks at Brooks are doing but I hope they aren’t redesigning shoes for the sake of redesigning shoes. It just seems a waste to take a perfect shoe and change it all around, to the point its not anything like the old model.

Ferret- Yeah, it’s frustrating when you find the perfect shoe, and then its “ruined”. A lot of times, the changes aren’t structural, but something as simple as moving a seam can change the way a shoe fits, which takes your perfect shoe and makes it not work.

Brooks made the Infinity, which is my favorite shoe to date. Unfortunately for me, Brooks is not going to continue making it- not just update it, but stop making it. I also have the Ravenna now, but will be stocking up on the Infinity before they’re gone for good.

Over the years, my feet and running have changed some, and I’m guessing if Asics were to go back and make a shoe identical to what I ran in 6-7 years ago (and really liked until they got updated…), I wouldn’t like it. I think it’s actually not a bad thing to switch around some on purpose so you don’t get too attached to one shoe. I had the luxury of always trying new stuff for a few years when I had the shop, but I’m still trying to live by that advice and keep a few shoes in the rotation- It’s not as varied as it used to be, but I have the Infinity, Ravenna, and I use the Saucony Exodus for some of my trail runs.

The shoe companies will always be changing the shoes. Unfortunately, for every person who thinks that a shoe is the best shoe ever made, there are a few people who hate it, and a lot of people who think it can be improved in one of a million ways. If you love a shoe, stock up as soon as the update comes out, and start the process of trying on everything else similar to it until you find something else you like. If the adrenaline worked for you, there are a lot of options that will functionally work, its just a matter of finding what you like the best out of whats available. Don’t be afraid to try 1/2 size up or down also-that can really change how the shoe feels.

Any reason besides weight why you want to get out of the Adrenaline?

Thanks for the words of warning. It is a very deliberate and conscious choice. I could be mistaken in thinking I need a neutral shoe, but the only way to find out for sure is to give it a shot.

Based on off242’s comment about the feeling of the high arch disappearing after a couple of runs, I think that I’m going to try on the Ghost 2’s again, and probably buy them.

Just wanted to thank hoss19 for this suggestion.

That was exactly what I needed to do.
