hello,
probably moving to nyc over the summer. i explored the city quite a bit last week. i really like the park slope area of brooklyn but was wondering what the cycling options were from there. i know laps around prospect park are a possibility but how about longer rides? how would riding through city to GW bridge and 9W be? I’m a rookie so wouldn’t know how to get there safely…
thanks,
andy
Those 2 rides listed are your main options. Prospect Park laps are great- the park is close and most of it is closed to cars most of the time. It is an ideal place for doing intervals.
The ride up to 9W isn’t that great because there is a bit of traffic on the NYC bike paths during regular hours, but it is pretty dead early or late. You will always hit traffic on the way home from the ride, unless you go on a weekday. To get there you go across the Manhattan Bridge to the West side bike path, then eventually cut off that to the GWB. Once up there, it is quite nice. The ride along the river through the park near the GWB is really nice, 9W is pretty good and there are places beyond Nyack that I have not been to. You can easily end up with a 100 mile rountrip if you want. There is not much city riding, other than down Canal St (busy) for maybe a couple miles.
