Broken toes: your experience?

Dropped a cordless drill on my little piggies, barefoot while standing on concrete. An older 15v drill with the big heavy battery.

Cracked the tips of my two middle toes. “non displaced toe fractures, distal phalanges, third and fourth toes.”

Curious what your stories of recovery are. My pain went from a 10 to a 3 within 48 hours, but it seems to be staying at a 3. No meds or ice, just taped together.

I’m riding, cautiously, nothing more than 50 miles for now. Few spin classes, masters swim with cautious flip turns.

I’m mostly curious…how long does it absolutely SUCK to walk? Riding a bike is no problem, walking across the living room or getting up off the floor just stinks.

Your experiences please? Running is not in my equation until July, it’s all about riding and swimming.

Thanks…

You’ve got them taped, so that is the big part. Now, I forsee more swimming and biking in your near future. Take some anti-inflamitories, elevate while resting, ice two or three times a day, keep them warm to promote blood flow.

Last time I busted a toe, I was not able to run for about a week. Then I was able to with them still taped together, but they would hurt if I went longer than about 30 minutes. After about two weeks it was just a memory.

After about two weeks it was just a memory.

that is great news. I made up my mind that was going to be my story when this began.

But walking stinks. Limping brings on all kinds of little tweaks.

Thanks…

I busted my big toe in a similar way about a year ago (dropped a cinder block on it). To be honest, the swimming was worse than running or biking. I wasn’t able to run for about a week, but after that I was OK. It was kind of nagging for almost 6 months, but I never really thought about it when I was running.

Swimming was harder for me. Every time I kicked my foot, the water resistance really hurt my toe. It was much better if I could stabilize it with tape, but the tape always fell off in the water…

A few years ago I did a half with a toe I busted two weeks earlier. I taped them up and it hurt, but I finished with a relatively good time.

The tape I’m using hasn’t been coming off. I don’t kick at all since it feels dangerous, and sort of disrupt my lane mates a little during Masters, doing only freestyle which disrupts our normal pattern. Breast and fly kick is too sketchy. So I’m pulling only, but every flip turn has been like my life depends on it, thinking about pushing off with only one foot. It’s been very stressful worrying about every flip turn.

Riding seems fine. I’m just ready for the walking discomfort to go away, curious about other stories.

Thanks…

You will “feel” fine in around 10-14 days, but the fractures will take about 6 weeks to heal. Some people still feel some tenderness in tight shoes to to deep pressure for 12 wks or more though.

I stupidly broke my second toe while training for my first HIM 2 years ago. I remember being out of the running game for at least a few weeks. Cycling hurt too, but I was back on the bike before the run.

Oh good a broken toe thread, get to tell “my story” again LOL
Broke my toe during the swim at Florida Ironman at the half way point where you get out of the water run across the beach then back into the water for the second lap. I accidently ran into some guys heal that was in front of me and broke my second to little toe… Yup it hurt like crazy but was able to finish my race 11:11 : ))
Took about two and a half to three weeks to get back to running without much pain. No worries.

I broke a middle toe on my left foot the day before a half iron last August. It looked ugly as hell (all purple and black, swollen, etc.) but it only hurt if I flexed the toe down towards the sole of the foot, so I did the race (I actually didn’t know it was broken until an x-ray the day after the race). Walking was fine the morning of the race, and the swim and the bike were fine. Even the 1st 5 miles of the run were OK, but then all hell broke loose and I wound up walking much of the rest of the race.

I didn’t run for a month after that but biking and swimming were fine.

I’ve broken my big toes on both feet. Both times, for the first few days the pain wasn’t bad. Once the swelling went away, which was pretty minimal, there was some pretty intense pain flare ups for a few days. Then after about 1.5 weeks some mild discomfort at times but nothing noteworthy.

Well I suppose with enough encouragement, I could produce photos.
